Spiral galaxies are galaxies that have a central bulge and protruding spiral-shaped arms wrapped around the center in a flat, rotating disc. The Milky Way galaxy is an example of a spiral galaxy, with its central bulge and spiral arms composed of gas and dust as well as billions of stars. Spiral galaxies make up approximately 70% of the galaxies in the local universe.
