Key Teaching Points

Batting

Basic KTP’s

- “Step, Stop, Swing”

Basic Grip

- V shape

- Hands together, fingers together

- Non dominant hand on top

Stance

- stand side on to bowler

- Feet shoulder width apart

- Knees slightly bent, relaxed

- Eyes level, watching ball

Backswing

- foot, shoulders, arms and bat move at the same


time and the same plane

- Backlift of bat between WK and 1st Slip

- Hands close to body

Downswing

- complete step towards the line of the ball before downswing starts

- Knees brace, feet still

- Shoulders, arms and bat rotate forward in the same


plane

Impact

- watch the ball

- Full face of the bat (show the sponsors)

- Bat swings along the line of the target for as long as


possible

Followthrough

- bat continues to swing through line of target after impact

- Bat finishes over the shoulder

- Feet remain still

Types of Batting

Front Foot Drive

- play to full pitch ball

- Acceleration in downswing

- Top hand in control

- Full face of bat and followthrough

Back Foot Defence

- move back foot and across to off stump

- Front foot back and in line with body

- Top hand firm

- Front elbow high

- Bottom hand relaxed

Back Foot Leg Glance

- assume same position as back foot defence

- Turn wrist at ball contacts bat

Back Foot Drive

- stabilise back foot

- Keep arms in close to body

- Head steady, eyes level

- Front elbow high at point of contact

- full swing of bat

Cut

- back foot back and across

- Head to line of the ball

- Extend arms

- Keep hands high

- Don't lean back

Pull

- back foot back and across

- Arms extended

- Roll wrists

- Head steady

- Rotate shoulders

Hook

- back foot back and across

- Arms extended

- Head steady

Sweep

- ball should be hit on half volley or on full

- Cover the line of ball with pads

- Bat in horizontal plane at impact

- Bat comes from high to low

- Weight forwards

Running Between Wickets, Calling

- yes, no or wait

- Move low into crease when turning

- Carry bat in appropriate hand when turning to keep the ball in view

- Ground and slide the bat 1m before the crease line
