GENERAL REFLECTION IN ENGLISH
English is the universal language of our world and it must be learned because it is the
only way for all people in earth of different races can understand and communicate each other.
In our country the Philippines, we Filipinos love to study English and most especially to speak in
English. In fact, Filipinos are known to be the brown Americans by the western countries
because we are fluent in this language. To be honest, I’m not fluent in English but I really have
the passion to learn and to be fluent in this language because with this attribute I can
communicate with other people whenever I travel around the world. It is a useful tool to have
my dreams come true because I can express my feelings and opinion to everyone in this world.
Many said that they don’t like English because of several reasons; one is that, they can’t
understand it well and they can’t able to speak it too, it is because learning English is not easy,
but they didn’t realize that everything in this world is not as easy as they think it would become.
In our education system there are rules that English must be taught to every students in every
school from the very beginning of their studies up to the end, like English is inseparable in our
studies for it is the sign that English is a part of our lives. In elementary days, where I first
encounter English, I remember every time I look above, there are writing on the walls of each
classroom that says “Speak in English” it is used for reminding the pupils to speak in English
when the time of English subject arrives and I would never forget that because that is how I
learn to love English. But in high school days things are change, there are no more writings in
the wall because it is your responsibility to speak it without anything to remind you and the
lessons are getting harder however it is getting more interesting for me because that time I
discover that English is not only focuses on the part of the speeches, subject-verb agreement
and grammar, that would make my day in school boring but I find out that it discusses different
aspects like writing and reading and that is why I love English much more since reading is my
favourite hobby because I believe that through reading I can speak fluently in English and to
expand my vocabulary of some English difficult words and it also taught me how to analyze my
readings and ways on how to remember it, not by only reading it like how I used to do.
Recently, when I entered the gates of PNU-Mindanao pressure and stress are slowly
killing me. The atmosphere in college is very different from what I am used to in high school,
though in high school the lessons are complicated but my time in making homework, projects
and studying the lessons is long so it is manageable for me to handle it. But, in my case these
days there are times that I lose hope, I’m thinking of giving up because this is too much for me
to handle I can’t even notice the time is running because of many things that I have to settle
like some extra-curricular activities, projects, lessons I have to study and a lots of edmodo’s
and I doubt if I have to pursue my decision in making English as my major course because I
think I’m not able stand it because I think it is very difficult, but, I realize that I can’t easily give
up because this is where my future lays and I don’t want to waste the hard work my parents
give to me just to send me in school so I will fight all the way whatever it takes. My course in
English now is Oral communication and it talks about the English language how people
communicate using it and the mutual interaction between two or more people, in that kind of
topic it really catches my attention and I’m fascinated by it because I wanted to be an effective
communicator, that I can able to express my feelings towards people boosting with pride and
confidence and having always that fearless spirit. I have noticed so far that there are
improvements in me, from the first performance I lack in confidence and I underestimated what
I can able to do, but I notice that I’m slowly learning and I am slowly building my confidence in
speaking in front it is because of the help of our English instructor Ms. Jealf Zenia Castro I am
able to understand more about oral communication, Ms. Castro is a fresh graduate of PNU-
Mindanao as a Magna Cumlaude and a major in English in her batch, she is truly inspiring for
the reason that with all the hardships and trials while she is studying in PNU, she conquer it
using her smart and wise actions and achieved her greatest reward. And with that story I
realize that if Ms. Castro did it, why can’t I? If all of the fourth year students endure the entire
burden, I can also endure all the pain and challenges. Well, that’s life of a student you will
strive hard to survive and I promise to myself that I will do my best here in PNU to graduate
and march proudly in the stage after four years of fighting and surely that time I will be
satisfied, fulfilled and happy.
Therefore I conclude that the course Oral Communication help me out a lot in
conquering my fear in performing in front of people that’s why I am really thankful ‘cause as
early as the first term I have learned a lot about English and I guarantee that all the learning’s
I have in my mind in Oral Communication will be put into action and will stay always in my
heart and in the next courses in English I will listen and put in mind every lesson because I
want to expand more my knowledge about it and whatever the obstacles I may encounter in
college I will face it with my heads up high because I always believe in the sayings that “If
there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
