Offsite Tech Framework for Affordable Housing

This document announces the Creative Construction Conference 2017 which will take place from June 19-22, 2017 in Primošten, Croatia. It also summarizes a paper that will be presented at the conference about evaluating offsite construction technologies for affordable housing in India. The paper proposes a holistic selection framework using attributes to evaluate offsite technologies for affordable housing, as rejecting technologies based only on cost is not sufficient. It identifies mandatory and desired attributes and tests the framework on a case study to help increase the adoption of offsite construction to help address India's need for 18.78 million new housing units by 2022.

Abstract
Scarcity of attribute based criteria analysis is inhibiting us from realizing the benefits of offsite
technologies. Adoption of offsite technologies remains low in the Indian construction industry
in spite of gigantic requirement of 18.78 million housing units to be built by 2022. The
traditional bricks and sticks approach is not going to fulfil the gigantic requirement. Adoption
of Offsite technologies have to be looked upon as an option to cater the extensive requirement
in the area of affordable housing. Rejection of a technology by evaluating the cost alone is not
the desired strategy to evaluate these offsite technologies. To evaluate and adopt these offsite
technologies in affordable housing segment, a holistic selection framework encompassing a
set of attributes is the need for the day. This paper identifies a holistic selection framework
with a set of offsite specific and standard at-tributes that are mandatory and desired for the
adoption of offsite technologies in the affordable housing. Simple scoring of attributes is
utilized in devising the framework. This framework is tested and validated on a case study
where offsite technologies are used.
