Base Plate Design Calculations

The document provides design inputs and calculations for a base plate that will support a column. It includes load cases specifying axial forces, moments and shears on the column. It then calculates the length of the compression zone, base pressure, maximum tension in the anchor bolts, and checks the strength of the base plate and flange. Design of the anchor bolts and stiffeners is also checked to ensure adequacy based on the calculated forces and moments.

dt Pm

Where,

yo = Length of the compression zone

hp = Length of the Base Plate

N = Axial compressive force in the column
M = Moment at the bottom of the column
At = Total sectional area of the anchor bolt
dt = Distance between the centre of anchor bolt to the CG of the section
n = Coefficient d' equivalence = Ea / Eb
where Ea = Modulus of elasticity of Steel
Eb = Modulus of elasticity of Concrete
Inputs :
Column HEA500
hp = 800 mm
bp = 400 mm
hc = 490 mm
bc = 300 mm
tf = 23 mm
tw = 12 mm
N = 10335 daN
M = 9057 m-daN
Bolt (f) = 30 mm
Cross Spacing (s) = 200 mm

At = 1122 mm2 ( 2 Nos of 30dia Bolts on either side )
n = 15 (Ea / Eb)
a2 = 80 mm
dt = 325 mm ( dt = a2 + hp/2)

To find the position yo of the neutral axis, we use the graph 1 (see annexe)

(dt+ M/N) = 1.66

(dt+ hp/2)

2 n At = 0.116
bp (dt+hp/2)

From the chart, the value of yo/(dt + hp/2) = 0.395

Yo = 286.38 mm

Base Pressure in the concrete : Pression sur beton

pm = 2(M + N dt)
bp yo (dt + (hp/2) - (yo/3))

= 0.3443 daN/mm2
pm = 34.43 daN/cm2
Maximum Tension in the Bolt:

Ft or Nj = M - N (hp/2 - yo/3)
2*(dt + (hp/2) - (yo/3))

Ft or Nj = 4694 daN

Design of Anchor Bolts : Calcul des boulons d'ancrage :

Diameter of the anchor bolt = 30 mm

Maximum tension in one bolt = 4694 daN
Area of the bolt used = 561 mm2
Allowable stress in the bolts S235 = 22.5 daN/mm2
Allowable force in the bolt = 10098 daN > 4694 daN

Hence ok

Average pressure on the concrete : Pression moyenne sur be'ton :

p = 2*N = 2 x 10335 x 10 = 0.646 N / mm2

bp hp 400 x 800
s bc = 0.85 fc28 = 0.85 x 25 = 14.17 N / mm2
1.5 1.5
p = k s bc = 1.5 x 14.17 = 21.26 N / mm2 > 0.646 N / mm2

Hence Ok

Check for Flange in Tension

that is = 150

Nj = 4694 daN < Leff x tf x s e = 150 x 23 x 26.5

Hence Ok
