Bit Torrent Tutorials

The first things you need to know about using Bit Torrent:
-- Bit Torrent is aimed at broadband users (or any connection better than dia
lup).
-- Sharing is highly appreciated, and sharing is what keeps bit torrent alive.
-- A bit torrent file (*.torrent) contains information about the piece structur
e of the download (more on this later)
-- The method of downloading is not your conventional type of download.
Since downloads do not come in as one
big chunk, you are able to download from many people at once, increasing
your download speeds. There may be
100 "pieces" to a file, or 20,000+ pieces, all depending on what you're dow
nloading. Pieces are usually small (under 200kb)
-- The speeds are based upon people sharing as they download, and seeders.
Seeders are people who constantly
share in order to keep torrents alive. Usually seeders are on fast connection
s (10mb or higher).

In this tutorial, I will be describing it all using a bit torrent client called
Azureus. This client is used to decode the .torrent files into a useable forma
t to download from other peers. From here on out, I will refer to Bit Torrent a
s BT.

Which BT client you use, is purely up to you. I have tried them all, and my
personal favorite is Azureus for many reasons. A big problem with most BT
clients out there, is that they are extremely CPU intensive, usually using
100% of your cpu power during the whole process. This is the number one rea
son I use Azureus. Another, is a recently released plug-in that enables you
to browse all current files listed on [Link] (the #1 source for torr
ent downloads).

Before you use the plug-in, take a look at /[Link] and brow
se the files. Hold your mouse over the links, and you'll notice every file en
ds in .torrent. This is the BT file extension. Usually, .torrent files are ve
ry small, under 200kb. They contain a wealth of information about the file yo
u want to download. A .torrent file can contain just 1 single file, or a a di
rectory full of files and more directories. But regardless, every download is
split up into hundreds or thousands of pieces. The pieces make it much easie
r to download at higher speeds. Back to [Link]. Look at the columns:

Added | Name | Filesize | Seeds | DLs (and a few more which aren't very usef
ul.)

I'll break this down.

Added: Self explanitory, its the date the torrent was added.
Name: Also self explanitory.
Filesize: Duh
Seeds: This is how many people are strictly UPLOADING, or sharing. These peo
ple are the ones that keep .torrent files alive. By "alive", I mean, if ther
e's no one sharing the .torrent file, no one can download.
DLs: This is how many people currently downloading that particular torrent.
They also help keep the torrent alive as they share while they download.

It's always best to download using a torrent that has a decent amount of se
eders and downloaders, this way you can be assured there's a good chance yo
ur download will finish. The more the better.

Now that you should understand how torrent files work, and how to use the
m, on to Azureus!
First, get JAVA! You need this to run Azureus, as java is what powers it. G
et Java here: /[Link]
Next, get Azureus at: /[Link]
Next, get the Suprnovalister plugin from /[Link]
orage/[Link]

Install Java JRE before you do ANYTHING.

Install Azureus, and then in the installation folder, create 2 more fo

lders. ./Plugins/suprnovalister (For example, if you installed Azureus
to C:\PROGRAM FILES\AZUREUS, create C:\PROGRAM FILES\AZUREUS\PLU
SUPRNOVALISTER). Next, put the [Link] file that you downlo
aded, in that folder.

Load up Azureus, and if you want, go through the settings and personalize it
.

The tab labeled "My Torrents" is the section of Azureus you need the most o
ften. That lists all your transfers, uploads and downloads. It shows every
bit of information you could possibly want to know about torrents you downl
oad.

In the menu bar, go to View > Plugins > Suprnova Lister. This will open up
a new tab in Azureus. Click on "Update Mirror". This will get a mirror site
of [Link] containing all current torrent files available. Once a mir
ror is grabbed, choose a category from the drop-down box to the left and cl
ick "Update". Wah-lah, all the available downloads appear in the main chart
above. Just double click a download you want, and bang its starting to dow
nload. Open the "My Torrents" tab again to view and make sure your download
started.

After your download has finished, be nice, and leave the torrent transferring
. So people can get pieces of the file from you, just as you got pieces from
other people.

Alternatively, if you don't want to use the plugin... you can just head to su
[Link] and download files to any folder. Then go to File > Open > .torren
t File in Azureus.

This should about wrap it up for the Bit Torrent Tutorial. If you guys think o
f anything I should add, or whatnot, just let me know and I'll check into it.

Common questions

Azureus has several advantages over other BitTorrent clients. It is less CPU-intensive, which means it doesn't consume as much computation power, providing a smoother experience . Moreover, Azureus supports plugins such as the Suprnovalister, which allows users to easily browse and download files from suprnova.org directly within the client . This feature enhances user convenience by integrating the browsing and downloading processes. Additionally, Azureus has a comprehensive interface with the 'My Torrents' tab, offering detailed information on transfers, uploads, and downloads. These factors make Azureus a user-friendly and efficient choice for handling torrent files compared to other more CPU-demanding clients .

A high number of downloaders and seeders positively impacts a torrent download by increasing the chances of faster download speeds and completion. With more seeders available, there are more sources from which complete file pieces can be obtained, speeding up the download process . More downloaders also contribute positively, as they share pieces with each other, further bolstering speed and efficiency. The presence of a considerable number of users engaged in both downloading and seeding ensures that even if some users go offline, others can still supply the needed file pieces. This dynamic provides a level of assurance that the download will complete, as the torrent network has sufficient redundancy and overlap in available pieces .

To maximize download speeds when using BitTorrent clients, select torrents with a high number of seeders and downloaders to ensure data availability and consistency. Utilizing a client like Azureus, which is less CPU-intensive, can also maintain better performance . Install plugins such as Suprnovalister for convenient torrent management and optimized resource allocation . Furthermore, ensure that your internet connection is not throttled or restricted, and configure your BitTorrent client settings to optimize for high-speed connections. Enabling options for optimizing data sharing among peers contributes to maintaining optimal download and upload rates .

The Suprnovalister plugin enhances Azureus by allowing users to browse and access torrents directly from suprnova.org within the client, streamlining the process of finding and downloading files . This integration saves time and effort by eliminating the need to manually source torrents from websites. However, potential drawbacks include dependency on the plugin for finding torrents, which can limit users to the specific torrents available through the plugin's sources. Additionally, if the plugin's compatibility is not maintained with future software updates or the website itself becomes outdated, users might face disruptions in their workflow . Thus, while the plugin offers convenience, it may also limit flexibility and adaptability in torrent management.

Seeders play a crucial role in the BitTorrent network by ensuring that torrent files remain available for downloading. They are users who have completed downloading a file but continue to share it with the network, allowing others to download pieces from them. The more seeders present, the better the availability and health of a torrent, as they help maintain the file's accessibility . When a torrent lacks seeders, it risks becoming unavailable, as there are fewer sources for new downloaders to access the complete file from . Thus, seeders are essential for sustaining the vitality and availability of torrents in the BitTorrent ecosystem.

The sharing mechanism in BitTorrent significantly impacts the functionality and speed of downloads, as it relies on users to share files actively. The protocol distributes pieces of the file among users who are downloading and uploading simultaneously. This peer-to-peer sharing increases download speeds because users download from multiple sources rather than a single one . Additionally, the presence of seeders—users who have completed their download but continue to upload—ensures that torrents remain available for everyone and helps maintain high download speeds. A high number of downloaders and seeders generally leads to more stable and faster downloads due to the increased availability of pieces .

Sharing is fundamentally important in the BitTorrent ecosystem as it determines the health and longevity of torrents. The system relies on users sharing files actively—both during and after downloads—to keep torrents accessible to others . This extensive sharing network allows for high download speeds and redundancy, ensuring that files do not become unavailable when individual users go offline. Seeders, by continuing to upload files post-download, play a pivotal role in this sharing process. Without adequate sharing, download success is compromised, as users may end up with incomplete files or reduced speeds due to a lack of available pieces distributed over the network . Therefore, sharing sustains the efficient redistribution of files across the network, ensuring ongoing accessibility and network efficiency.

To set up and use Azureus for downloading BitTorrent files, first, you need to install Java as it powers Azureus . You can download Java from the official website. Then, download Azureus from its source website. It is crucial to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) before anything else. Next, for enhanced functionality, download the Suprnovalister plugin. Install Azureus, create a folder named PLUGINS/suprnovalister in the installation directory, and place the downloaded suprnovalister.jar file there. Start Azureus and navigate to View > Plugins > Suprnova Lister, then click "Update Mirror" to list all current torrent files available. These steps ensure that Azureus is properly equipped to handle torrent files and optimize the downloading experience .

A .torrent file contains detailed structural information essential for the BitTorrent protocol, including metadata about the files to be distributed and instructions for how they are broken into smaller pieces . These pieces allow for decentralized downloading from multiple sources, thus facilitating quicker and more efficient file transfers. The .torrent file also includes information like file names, sizes, and locations, enabling the BitTorrent client to manage and verify the download process accurately. This information is vital because it coordinates how the file is constructed once downloaded from various peers, ensuring data integrity and download efficiency .

To fully utilize the Suprnovalister plugin within Azureus, you must first ensure that Java is installed, as it is required for Azureus to run . Install Azureus, then create a directory named PLUGINS/suprnovalister in the Azureus installation folder. Download the suprnovalister.jar file and place it in this directory. Once Azureus is loaded, navigate to the menu bar and select View > Plugins > Suprnova Lister. This action opens a new tab, where you will then click 'Update Mirror' to load a list of torrents from the suprnova.org site, enabling browsing and downloading within the client. These steps integrate the plugin into Azureus, optimizing its torrent management capabilities .
