Management information systems (MIS) process information to support managerial decisions. Decision support systems (DSS) aid business decisions. The information system is the set of formal procedures by which data are collected, processed into
information, and distributed to users.

Introduction
There are various types of Information System according to the different needs of organization,
commonly:
1. Transaction Processing System (TPS) - transaction processing systems meet the data
collection, storage, processing and putting outputs of functionalities for the core operations of a
business.

Examples of TPS
 Payroll Systems
 Order Processing Systems
 Reservation Systems
 Stock Control Systems
 Systems for payments and funds transfers

2. Management Information System (MIS) - refers to the processing of information through


computers and other intelligent devices to manage and support managerial decisions within an
organization.

3. Decision Support System (DSS) - is a system based information system that supports business or
organizational decision-making activities.
 Group Decision Support System (GDSS)
 Computer Supported Co-operative Work (CSCW)
 Logistics Systems

4. Executive Information System (EIS), also known as an Executive Support System (ESS) - is a type
of management information system that facilitates and supports senior executive information
and decision-making needs. It provides easy access to internal and external information relevant
to organizational goals.

Examples of EIS

 Executive Information Systems tend to be highly individualized and are often custom
made for a particular client group; however, a number of off-the-shelf EIS packages do
exist and many enterprise level systems offer a customizable EIS module.
