Green Microcity: An Agritecture Design approach to mitigating

Urban Heat Effect in Davao City

ABSTRACT

Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, which is evidently found in Davao City, has been causing
discomfort to urban dwellers due to climate change. UHIs affect our collective energy
consumption, air and water quality, human health & comfort. Although urban climatologists
have previously studied these issues, there is apparent community interest and concern in the
local setting. The attention to heat-related environment and health issues has helped to
advance the development of heat island reduction strategies, mainly trees and vegetation,
green roofs, and cool roofs (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). The
study, which focuses on an Agritecture approach, aims to incorporate the concept of food
production and sustainable green solutions to reduce the surge of the UHI effect in the city.
Through highlighting the broad application of agritecture design, the study also focuses on the
use of vertical farming systems, ecological strategies for the environment, community farming,
resource recycling and sustainable living developments.
