Rejecting Foreign Research in Benham Rise

The author strongly disagrees with the DFA's approval of China conducting research in Benham Rise. The author believes Benham Rise belongs to the Philippines and that Philippine researchers are already studying the area through the UP Marine Science Institute. The author is concerned China will exploit resources as they did before in Recto Bank without sharing information. The government should not seek foreign help, especially from China, and should instead support domestic research to become independent.

REACTION PAPER

I strongly disagree with DFA's approval of China's study in

Benham rise because first of all, it is about our own land. Benham
rise is also known as the Philippine rise, which means that it is part
of the territory of the Philippines. We do not need help from
foreign people, such as the Chinese, because we already have our
own research programs for that issue.

The UP MSI or University of the Philippines Marine Science

Institute has already been conducting research along the Pacific
seaboard and the Philippine rise in collaboration with Philippine
government and research institutions. This only means that our
country has its own researchers that can work with the issue that
has been popping out nowadays and since we have our own
trusted Filipino workers to research about it, we can fully know
that it is a credible and a reliable source.

Also, let us not forget Beijing's modus operandi in 2015

when they jeopardized the country's claims in the Recto Reed
Bank under the 2005 Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking. China
was able to discover the location of rich marine resources, yet they
did not share the information that they gathered through the JMSU
with the Philippines. The government should learn a lesson from
this and it might happen again if they let the Chinese researchers to
continue researching in the Benham Rise.

To sum it up, the government should not seek help from

foreigners especially if we already have our own. Now is the time
to stand in our own feet so that we can become an independent
country that doesn’t rely on other countries. Learning in our own
can be a stepping stone for the Philippines to be a more
developing country and hopefully a successful one.
