a. AESTHETICS

The “alpha” chair is an object designed so

There is a clear reference in the hand made

There is a whole group (family) of furniture

that is based on the idea of the chair (see


picture 1
picture 1).

Its main feature is the linkage of the front

leg with the horizontal side traverse using

a small “branch”. This element is repeated

in the whole family which includes arm

chair, stool and easy chair. It is thought to

be produced of solid beech wood for the

domestic market. The base of the uphol

stered part is made of plywood. There

could be a contract version made of ply

wood and can come in various vibrant

(see picture 2). The contract version is

without fabric on the seat. picture 2


There are 3 different back versions (mini,

midi and maxi back, see picture 3).

Each back changes the character of the

chair and makes it appeal to different

groups of buyers.

Another main element of the design is the

rounded edges of the chair that smooth

ens the dynamic side view and makes it

more friendly and pleasant to the eye. The

seat is upholstered and with the character

side it appears softer. In the full back

version the fabric is visible from both sides

of the back making it a key optical

element.

Finally there is a diminution of the chair

that is visible from the top that makes it

more elegant and it adds to the dynamics

of the shape (see picture4)

b. PRODUCTION METHOD

Classical production methods need to be

applied for the production of the chair. It is

thought to be manufactured by machines

with minimal hand work. So although it

gives the impression that is hand made

(because of the sculptural effect) it can be

made exclusively by machines.

The side of the chair is composed by four

elements (see picture 5),

the front leg, the traversa, the back leg and

the linkage element “branch”.

Once the four parts are glued together,

the two sides of the chair are formed

(see picture 6).

Then we join the two sides with the front

and back traversa together with the back

(see picture 7).

Finally when all parts are in place the

smoothening of the edges takes place

with a router of a 0.5cm cutter (see picture

8).

So the chair is ready to proceed to the

next stages of production which are: the

finishing and the upholstery.

The final result is a chair elegant yet

dynamic, current yet looking hand made.

With the various versions of it, it can easily

fit in various environments both domestic

and contract ones.
