Multi-Station Intercom System Design

Communication is essential for connecting people across distances. An intercom system allows two or more locations to connect privately like a telephone. This document discusses planning and building a multi-station intercom system to facilitate one and two-way audio conversations across 16 stations in a building. The system will use a push-to-talk switch and connect stations with one or two amplifiers, using microphones and loudspeakers.

INTRODUCTION / BACKGROUND

Communication is an essential part of our everyday deeds. Advances in communication

technology have enabled any-time-anywhere link among people. There are extensive varieties
of devices to communicate with friends, family and workgroups members who are spread
geographically.

The purpose of a communication system is to transfer information between two or

more points. Generally, in a communication system it requires three things namely, a sender, a
medium, and a receiver. The information to be transferred may be in analog form, for example,
audio/voice as in the case of this study where voice is the source of information, or in digital
form. Attention arises in supporting communication within a building which is tough and
stressful going from one point to another within the building in order to distribute the
information. Therefore, an intercommunication system is a private telecommunication system
that permits usually two or more locations to connect with each other like telephone does; an
intercommunication system may be a simple two- station system or a multi- station system.

Countless production needs co-operation of people that uses special intercoms to cover
many users. Intercom systems used in TV and stage productions are normally headsets type
intercoms connected to one line using party line arrangement. The main use of this type of
system is in lives or media productions where (for example) the video director speaks to the
camera operators, or where the stage manager speaks to the stage hands and lighting operator.
A simple two station wired intercom system can be used as an intercom and door phone. One
can use an intercom system from the house to house gate to screen visitors to the house.

In this project work, discussions will base on plan and execution of a multi station
intercom system that will result in the instrumentation of a building to facilitate flexible one
and two-way audio conversations. The intercom circuit will consist of sixteen intercom stations
linked to each other with a push- to - talk (PTT) switch. This kind of circuit will consist of only
one or two amplifiers and generally uses loudspeakers as normal speaker and microphones
(how it is used depends on talk switch).
