The Power BI Report Server allows hosting Power BI reports on-premises using the same architecture as SQL Server Reporting Services. The Power BI Report Server allows organizations to host Power BI Reports on an on-

premises report server and is built upon the same architecture as SQL Server Reporting
Services, allowing also use the server to host paginated reports, mobile reports, and key
performance indicators (KPIs). Using Power BI Reports Server we have ability to view excel
workbooks within the web portal. It is a superset of SSRS. It contains everything that SSRS has,
and it adds the ability to render both Interactive (PBIX) and Analytical (XLSX) reports. To
acquire the Power BI Report server must either have Power BI Premium or have SQL Server
Enterprise Edition with Software Assurance, it still requires licensing individual users. Since it
is a superset of SSRS so Power BI Report Server can take the place of an existing SSRS instance
and meet all the existing functionality and also render Reports via the portal as well. With Power
BI Report Server, we’re introducing a modern, rapid release cycle independent of SQL Server.

If the organization only uses paginated reports on premises, then SSRS is a more cost-effective
option.

If the organization need to render interactive or analytical reports on premises, or already have
SQL Server Enterprise Edition with Software Assurance, then PBIRS will likely be best choice.

To be able to install Power BI Report Server, you need at least:

 Windows Server 2012


 SQL Server 2008 or later
 SQL Analysis Services 2012 or later

The content on the web portal is organized by type: Power BI reports, mobile reports, paginated reports and KPIs, plus Excel workbooks,
shared datasets, and shared data sources to use as building blocks for your reports. You can store and manage them securely here, in the
traditional folder hierarchy. You can tag your favorites, and you can manage the content if you have that role.

And you can schedule report processing, access reports on demand, and subscribe to published reports in the new web portal.
