Tube Expansion Procedure Guide

This document provides a procedure for leak tight tube to tubesheet joints where tubes are lightly expanded. It outlines the scope of the procedure, references no standards, and provides details on tube care, tube hole preparation, tube insertion, tube expansion, and inspection. Tube expansion is to achieve an expansion ratio between 1-3% for tubes of gauge 12-18, and 1-8% for tubes under gauge 12, to be checked on 10% of tubes and recorded.

1.0 SCOPE

1.1 This procedure is to achieve leak tight tube to tubesheet joints where these tubes
are expanded ( Light Expand ).

3.0 PROCEDURE

3.1 Type of Design

a) Tube to tubesheet joint expended with groove

3.2 Care of Tubes

a) End of tube shall be subject to careful visual inspection. There shall be no

scaling, scoring or rough surfaces.

3.3 Tube Holes In Tubesheet

a) Tube holes in tube sheet shall be drilled as indicated in drawing. Holes should
have no burrs or scoring marks and be circular with parallel sides and normal to
the tubesheet surface.

b) Edges of the holes shall not have sharp corner and shall have0.5 mm chamfer or
radius.

3.4 Insertion of Tubes

a) Clean the holes and ends of tubes from any dirt or solid matter, oil or grease.

b) Care shall be taken during assembly to avoid scoring of tube holes in tubesheet or
outer surface of tubes.

3.5 Tube Expanders and Expanding of Tubes

a) Tube expansion shall be carry out after completed welding tube to tubesheet.

b) Tube expanders of electronically controlled type shall be in good condition. The

tube expanders shall have Stops to maintain the length of expansion as
indicate in the drawing.

c) Tube shall be expanded into the tubesheet using the equipment and settings as
agreed between the inspector and manufacturer.

d) Percentage of thinning shall be based on expansion ration (ER%) defined by the

following formula: -

ER % = (d1 - d0) - (H-D) x 100

D - d0
Where
d1 = inner diameter of tube after expansion
do = inner diameter of tube before expansion
H = diameter of tube sheet hole
D = Outer diameter of the tube before expansion
ER = Expansion ratio

d) The acceptance criteria are as follow (Heavy Expanded):

2% < ER% < 8% for tubes with gauge BWG 12 to 18

8% < ER% < 15% for tubes with gauges BWG < 12

e) The acceptance criteria are as follow ( Light Expanded ) :

1% < ER% < 3% for tubes with gauge BWG 12 to 18

1% < ER% < 8% for tubes with gauges BWG < 12

3.6 Inspection Of The Expansion

a) Tubes expanded will be check 10 % by the operator. The inspection result will be
recorded in expansion report .
