How Did I Choose My Project?

Less than a hundred years ago, the Civil War took place, and defining the rights and equality of
citizens in the US was a crucial topic during this time. I had become interested in learning about
the 54th Infantry as it was a regiment made up of African Americans, fighting in a war, that dealt
about slavery! I found this intriguing and saw National History Day as my chance to show how
their acts of bravery on the battlefield show the theme of Conflict and Compromise and, most
importantly, show my passion and interests.

How Did I Conduct My Research?

To complete my research, I had to first find information about the 54th Infantry on reliable
websites. This includes information about their background and battles. I then had to find
information on era this happened, in other words, the Civil War. I had to find information on why
it happened, when it happened and how it turned out. I was able to find this information on
multiple websites, such as in the National Archives and the Library of Congress. It gave
photographs and newspaper articles of the time period.

How Did I choose and Develop My Project Format?

I have chosen to do my project as a website, as it helps me effectively put information on my
project, fast. These pieces of information include, documentaries, photographs, lines of code
and quotes. I first created my front page, which is supposed to catch the readers attention. I
then organized my information into pages, which would then lead to subpages. Hese subpages
would thoroughly describe a specific topic. Weebly website creator facilitated the process of
creating my project.

How Does My Project Relate to the Theme?

The 54th Infantry was well-known for being courageous and heroic during times of despair.
They fought bravely in the battlefield during the Civil War until they were victorious. The
regiment experienced prejudice and the controversy of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the
surrender of the Confederacy. In other words, the 54th Infantry went through conflicts and,
eventually, compromises. Making it a perfect topic for the theme this year: Conflict and
Compromise.
