Skill 5: Establishing a Peripheral Intravenous Line for Infusion

of fluids
Task: Insert a cannula into a peripheral vein for fluid infusion, correctly and
safely

Criteria for satisfactory completion of task: when all relevant aspects of the task,
governed by the following principles, are demonstrated:
adequate preparation of the patient and tools for the procedure
conduct of the procedure adheres strictly to principles of asepsis and
standard precautions
consideration of patient safety and comfort
adequate documentation of the procedure
recognition of limitations and possible complications

Checklist

Expected Actions

1 Preparation
IV cannula for venous access
Infusion set connected to a bottle of IV fluid (e.g. Normal Saline)
Other necessary items

2 Inform patient verbal consent

3 Prepare the patient and select an appropriate peripheral vein (usually


on upper limb)

4 Wash hands /hand rubs

5 Don clean gloves

6 Apply a tourniquet above selected site of insertion

7 Disinfect the site

8 Cannulation:
Steady the selected vein
Inserts about of the cannula into the vein at an angle of about
30 degrees
Pull back the needle slightly

Check for backflow of blood, indicating that the needle is in
Advance the full length of cannula into the vein without moving
the needle

9 Release tourniquet

10 Using the non-dominant hand, steady the cannula between the thumb
and index finger, and press over the tip of cannula with the middle
finger , withdraw the needle from the cannula with the other hand

11 Dispose the used needle immediately into the Sharps Bin

12 Connect the infusion set to the cannula

13 Release pressure over the tip of the cannula

14 Confirm good flow through the infusion set before anchoring/fastening


the cannula to the skin

15 Ensure the cannula is fixed and steady

16 Adjust flow rate

17 Ensure patient s comfort

18 Clear used equipment

19 Remove gloves

20 Wash hands

21 Document

22 Continue monitoring
