Title of Activity: Waves in A Spring
Procedure:
1. Choose a partner and play with a spring to observe some properties of waves.
2. With one end of the spring held securely by your partner, stretch the spring to the right and to
the left (do not overstretch).
3. Then, move one end of the spring to the right and to the left while on the floor. Repeat these
actions but at a faster rate.
4. Now, compress several coils of the spring on one end. Release the compressed area of the
spring and observe what happens. Repeat these actions but this time double the number of
compressed coils.
Answer the following questions:
1. Record and draw your observations. Provide an explanation for each observation.
2. Identify the types of waves illustrated in the activity.
3. Explain how the rate at which the spring toy model left and right affect the frequency and wavelength
produced.
