IBP Law Week 2017: Law Debate Competition
September 20, 2017
Topic: This house believes that Philippines should revise the Constitution to adopt
Federalism.
Adviser/Consultant: ATTY. LEONEL CADIZ
Attendees: 90
Objectives: 1. to establish a collegiate debate competition that will focus on current
legal issues in order to aid the law students be abreast on legal
development.
2. to foster constructive competitiveness to allow students to pitch in their
ideas and propositions on how to make clear arguments.
3. to promote camaraderie among the community of the school, thus
strengthening the bond between the students.
Flow of activity:
The program was opened by the master of ceremony, Mr. Raemus
Evangelista, 2nd year student at 7:00p.m. As to the Part I Preliminaries, the opening
prayer was led by the DSC Secretary, Ms. Maria Janina Lourdes D. Formaran, also a 2nd
year student.
The event was then formally opened by the OIC of the Dean, Atty. Joseph
Adolfo Ilagan, in behalf of the College of Law Dean, Dr. Rey Oliver S. Alejandrino.
Moreover, Welcome Remarks was given by Atty. Tristan Jiff B. Cledera as the Director of
the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, also in behalf of the IBP President, Atty. Rodolfo R.

Zabella, Jr. Afterwards, for the Part II of the Program, the Introduction of Judges was
given by Atty. Joseph Adolfo Ilagan to welcome the Judges:
1) Atty. Azela Asilo-de Chavez;
2) Hon. Judge Ma. Francelyn G. Begonia; and
3) Hon. Judge Agripino R. Bravo.
Around, 7:30p.m., the Master of Ceremony introduced the Mediator, Dr.
Ricardo Mendoza and gave a brief background how debate works. Moreover, one of the
organizers, Ms. Kristel Caldoza, also a 2nd year student, presented the guidelines,
mechanics and the marking of debaters. Also, the participants were introduced.

The Debate Proper, Part III of the program was formally opened at 8:00p.m.
The first part was the speeches of each speaker then a rebuttal of the opposition and vice
versa; following the questions given by the judges.
After presenting the auditors for the tally scores, Ms. Laarnie E, Llamas, 3rd
year student and Ms. Jeizl E. De Luna, 4th year student, they proceeded to tally the scores
given by the judges. And to ease the tension of waiting for the results, Raffle Draw was
presented by the Master of Ceremony, Mr. Evangelista together with Ms. Junelyn Ella,
DSC P.R.O. 2nd year Representative, with the help of the Bar Operations Committee
Treasurer, Ms. Nancy Mendoza, also a 2nd year student.
After the declaration of winners for the Raffle draw was presented, the
certificates were given to the participants and the Judges. It was followed with a concise
speech of each Judges for their evaluation and comments for the event.
The judges, together with other IBP Members and Attorneys awarded the
certificates; as winners were announced starting from the Best Speaker and Best Debater
which was given to Mr. Jay-Rom Carabido and for the winning team, the Opposition.
Closing remarks and the closing prayer was led by the Master of Ceremony.
Dinner was held around 9:00p.m as the program ended.
