Lesson Plan for Adding 3-Digit Numbers

This lesson plan introduces 3rd grade students to adding 3-digit numbers. The teacher will begin with a warmup reviewing adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. Students will then learn to add 3-digit numbers by placing ones under ones, tens under tens, and hundreds under hundreds. For the first activity, students will solve addition problems verbally in groups and write the numbers and answers on the board. Next, students will complete an individual worksheet to assess their understanding of adding 3-digit numbers by applying the method taught. The teacher will evaluate students as they work and ensure they are adding numbers correctly from left to right in the vertical format.

Lesson Plan: Adding 3 digit numbers

Date: 5 oct 2017 Student: 24 students

Time: 8:15 8:55 School: Westgreen Primary School
MST: Miss. Leila Ali Class: 3G

Unit: Adding and Subtraction No. Ss 1

Prior Knowledge (What knowledge are you building on?)

Warming up: reviewing with the students about adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers and asking
them and using language of adding ( plus, sum, and, increase) and for subtracting ( take away, take from,
minus) while I ask them questions:
38+8=
10+15=
30-20=
10-10=

By asking them those question they will be engaged and using their own background

Lesson Activities: (What will students do in the lesson?)

After explaining how they will add three digit numbers on the board and reviewing with them ones,
tens, hundreds. By drawing the line between the first 3 digit numbers with second 3 digit numbers.
Ones with ones
Tens with tens
Hundreds with hundreds

First activity: Giving each group the solving problem verbally formed with first 3 digit number and
second 3 digit numbers and they have to write it down on the board and giving them time for solving
the problem.

Give students an example number, such as 458 with 170

Lesson Objectives: These must be SMART objectives specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound
By the end of the lesson, students will be (better) able to:

Students will be able to adding 3 digit numbers with 3 digit numbers.

Evaluation / Assessment: (How will you know your students have achieved the goal?)
(How will you evaluate the objectives that were identified? Have students practiced what you are asking them to do for
evaluation?)

By giving the students individual work on worksheet and walking around the students while they are
working.

Personal focus (related to PDP): In this lesson I am working on my time activity by using any strategy that
make the students know the time of activity finish.

Reflection:
The students were understanding the concept of the addition so it was easy for me to explain adding 3
digit numbers and giving them activities. I told them they have to start adding numbers from ones then
tens then hundreds as they write the Arabic words from left to right because LA students may be will
start adding from hundreds to ones and will get the wrong answers. As I saw Janas student, she started
adding from right to left.
Besides that, I have noticed that some students were starting to solve the problem solving horizontal so
they did not get the right answer because it is not organized as vertical. I asked Miss Leila to stop the
activity to tell them that they have to put the numbers vertical orderly. The lesson goes smoothly
because I prepared two activities very well and I noticed that the students were interesting while they
working in group activity.
