Civil Engineering Project Guidelines

The document provides instructions for a work based project in structural engineering. It contains two questions - the first asks to analyze a frame by calculating reactions, drawing force and moment diagrams, and a deflected shape. The second question asks to design a truss bridge to span 12 meters under given loading and support conditions, with member length and force requirements.

QUESTION 02 [50 MARKS]

A truss bridge is required to span over a 12 m wide ravine. One truss is to be provided on each
side of the bridge. Assuming that each truss needs to carry a load of w kN/m, make a truss that
satisfies the following conditions:
1. Left end of the truss has to be supported by a pin and the right end has to be supported by
a roller
2. No member of the truss can be longer than 4 m
3. Magnitude of the force in any member of the truss cannot be more than 6w kN
