Identifying Similarities and Differences

This lesson plan template provides guidance for teaching students to identify similarities and differences between two objects. The lesson involves having two student volunteers stand at the front to be compared. Students will be asked to identify similarities in attributes like color, size, and shape, and then differences between the students. During exploration, the teacher will monitor students and ask guiding questions to help them explain their reasoning about the similarities and differences they observe.

Using informal language to describe similarities and differences.

II. Critical thinking

Bloom: Identifying

The students will be able to identify the differences and similarities in different

objects.

III. ABCD lesson objective:

Students will be able to identify similarities and differences in 2 separate children

correctly.

IV. Learning target:

Find similarities and differences in two different children

V. Description of assessment:

(informal assessment)

The children will state the similarities and differences that they can identify

between the two different children.

VI. Materials needed and their location:

Materials:

- 2 children in the class (2 girls)

Location:

- Zebra carpet
VII. Procedures: Please make this so specific that a substitute teacher could
successfully implement your plan.

A. Engagement-How are you going to grab the students attention and pique
their interest?

After talking about similarities in the math lesson, we will move onto the
activity.
To start the activity, I will ask for 2 helpers to come up and stand in front of the
class. These 2 students will be compared to find the similarities and
differences.

B. ExplorationWhat are the students going to do to learn the concept or

skill that you want them to discover. What questions are they trying to
answer? Be very specific here. Please include the step-by-step instructions
you are going to give to the students. How are you going to monitor for
safety, neatness, and on-task behavior?

During this activity, the students will be able to identify the similarities
between 2 students. Once we are done reviewing similarities, we will talk about
differences.
-Specifically, find similarities in colors, size, shapes, and amounts.
-Continue collecting similarities till students run out of ideas, if they dont have
any, suggest a similarity they havent said
(spend no more than 2 mins per this is a review)
-Explain what differences are: these are things that are different, for example if
one thing is tall a difference would be short.
-Ask for differences that can be seen between the 2 students.
-Let the children use the time to come up with differences, help guide them if
they get stuck.

C. ExplanationHow are the students going to explain what they have

discovered? What questions will you use to guide them?

This activity will help the children to be able to discover how to identify
similarities and differences in 2 different objects.
After asking for differences continue with a follow up question.
What makes these 2 things different?
By asking this question, the children will be able to use blooms to explain their
reasoning.
D. ElaborationHow will you tie up the loose ends, correct possible
misconceptions, and tie the material to students real lives outside of
school?

When a child gives an example, take that time to explain how that child was
correct. You can explain their answer and point it out to the other children so
they have a chance to learn from others.

VIII. Closure
Review the differences of similarities and differences
