ASSIGNMENT #2

1. Make connection between what you have studied in this international, Diversity
course with what you have learned in other Gen Ed. Courses at SLCC this semester or
before.

Its kind of hard to make connections about immigration to other classes but what I
know is that in every class I took, there was probably an immigrant with a story to
tell. I never though being an undocumented or refugee could be so hard and
overwhelming. There is a lot we dont notice but getting through this class make me
realize how poor in knowledge we are. I have learned and growth.

2. How has Milton Bennetts model of intercultural sensitivity help you understand
ways in which we can improve our skills in communication, dealing and respecting
others from different cultures? How have you, yourself evolved in the DMIS scale
through your participation, reading, films, discussions, in this class?

Milton Bennetts model makes you realize where are you against other cultures. At
the beginning of this course I couldnt know in which state I was because it is hard to
think you dont want to know about other cultures and that you think your culture is
the best. I guess this model helps improve you communication with other and helps
you understand and listen. As doing this we gain some respect for other and from
others.

I think I am not in a bubble anymore. I have learned so much about other cultures
and how they were treated. Seeing so many experiences and reading about a lot of
people who crossed the borders of the United States have made me realize how
brave are these people. I have growth in knowledge and I have learned to accept
other cultures.

3. What impact did the assignments, discussions, interviews, and writing and
immigrant story did have on your understanding of immigration/ immigrants in the
U.S and around the world? Did they challenge your way of thinking or assumptions?

I did know a little bit about immigration. I was aware of how people cross borders
and how some of them lost their own lives. Sometimes before taking this class, I
though that this was dumb. Meaning that why do they leave their countries and go
to the U.S illegal when they can stay and be free. But know I know that they do it to
improve their own lives. Some of them could die in their own countries because of
starving. I know now that it doesnt matter the reason why people come here, the
thing that matter is that they want better quality of life.

It was challenging knowing all these stories. It was hard to watch them to. Im really
sensitive with things like this and knowing how much sacrifice and lost they
encounter, make it worse. It doesnt seems like it but there is people who leave
everything behind and dont turn their backs never again. It is hard but there is
people who you can really admire.
