DB9 Encoder Introduction

When designing the Marksman Duo product line, FoxJet, responding to customer requests,
implemented a product line encoder change from the previously used Eurofast connector to
a more widely used industrial standard DB9 connector. In order to support this new
connector, FoxJet developed a new encoder with a 25 integrated cable and a DB9
connector. This new RoHs compliant encoder, part number 5760820-IJ, is smaller and
easier to install yet maintains the flexibility that was available in the previous encoder.

Controllers Supported: Marksman Pro (Revision H or higher)

Currently, the Marksman Net will continue to feature the Eurofast encoder connector and
utilize the Eurofast encoder, part number 2464-603, which is still an available part. The
Marksman Net is expected to be updated to the DB9 format in the coming months.

Backward and Forward Encoder Compatibility

FoxJet understands the need to provide forward and backward compatibility options.
FoxJet has developed an Encoder Compatibility kit for use with either a previous revision
controller and the new DB9 encoder OR a new controller and the Eurofast encoder. This kit,
2465-178 is currently available at a list price of $140.00. The instructions for that kit are
on the following pages for your convenience.

revision of Marksman Pro or Duo controllers or use the D-sub based encoder assembly (5760-820-IJ) with
previous revision Marksman Pro or all revisions of the Marksman Net. Refer to the sections below for
installation setups noting that some items in the kit may not be used in all setups.

Installation Setup A: DB9 Based Encoder on the Marksman Pro (Rev. A-G) or the Marksman Net

Controllers used in this setup:

Common questions

Powered by AI

For installation with a DB9-based encoder on older Marksman Pro (Rev. A-G) or Marksman Net controllers, a specific adapter and adapter cable are required to connect the DB9M connector to the controller. In contrast, for the Eurofast-based encoder on current revision controllers, an M12 male to DB9 male adapter cable is attached directly to the M12 male connector on the encoder, omitting the need for the original 10-foot M12 Female to Female cable .

The Encoder Compatibility Kit includes a 6-foot M12 Female to DB9 Male adapter cable (2465-175), a DB9F-DB9F Resistor Dongle (2465-177), and a 10-foot straight-through DB9M to DB9F cable (5760-150-010). These components provide the necessary physical connections and signal adaptations to ensure compatibility between different revisions of encoders and controllers .

RoHs compliance signifies that FoxJet's new encoder is environmentally friendly and meets restrictions on the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. This alignment with industry standards helps ensure safety, facilitates global trade, and addresses environmental concerns .

FoxJet decided to switch from the Eurofast connector to the DB9 connector in response to customer requests for a more widely used industrial standard connector. This change was part of the design for their Marksman Duo product line to enable easier installation and to maintain flexibility in their products .

Marksman Pro revision levels determine the appropriate encoder system to use. For instance, revisions H and higher can use both DB9 and Eurofast encoders directly, while earlier revisions (A-G) require specific compatibility kits and adapters to use new DB9-based encoders .

The adapter dongle (2465-177) in the FoxJet Encoder Compatibility Kit is used to connect a DB9M encoder to a controller via an adapter cable. It plays a crucial role in converting the physical interface, allowing for connection flexibility between different generations of encoders and controllers .

Future developments for the Marksman Net product line involve updating the system to support the DB9 connector format, aligning it with the current industry standard just as the Marksman Duo has already adopted. This change will eventually phase out the Eurofast connector, promoting uniformity and easing maintenance for FoxJet distributors .

The benefits of FoxJet's new encoder system for the Marksman Duo include compliance with RoHs, ease of installation due to its smaller size and lighter weight, and continued flexibility without compromising the capabilities of the previous system .

The Encoder Compatibility Kit includes various cables and adapters that allow older controllers to connect with new DB9 encoders and new controllers to connect with older Eurofast encoders. This flexibility ensures that customers can upgrade their systems incrementally without the immediate need to replace all existing equipment, safeguarding past investments .

FoxJet has implemented an Encoder Compatibility Kit that facilitates the use of either older or newer encoder systems with various revisions of their controllers. This kit includes adapters and cables to allow for the connection of both the older Eurofast-based encoder and the newer DB9-based encoder with different Marksman controller revisions .
