Understanding Secret and Asymmetric Keys

With secret (symmetric) key cryptography, the same key is used to both encrypt and decrypt messages. Anyone with the secret key can create or read messages, so it does not verify who sent a message or if it was intended for a specific recipient. An asymmetric crypto system uses a key pair with a private key for digitally signing messages and a public key for verifying the digital signature. A digital signature authenticates an electronic record by a subscriber using an electronic method, and a key pair in an asymmetric system consists of a private key for signing and a public key for signature verification.

I Secret key (symmetric) - With secret key, the same key is used to encrypt

information and decrypt information. Hence the operation is symmetric. With

secret key systems you don't know who sent the message or if it is for a specific

recipient, because anyone with the secret key could create or read the message.

Asymmetric crypto system means a system of a secure key pair consisting of a

Private Key for creating a digital signature and a public key to verify the digital

signature;

Digital signature means authentication of any electronic record by a subscriber by

means of an electronic method or procedure in accordance with the provisions of

section 3;

Key pair, in an asymmetric crypto system, means a private key and its

mathematically related public key, which are so related that the public key can verify

a digital signature created by the private key;
