HOMEWORK # 2
Due date: 2/11/2017
1. (20 pts.) The base B has pKb = 5.00.
a. What is the value of pKa for the acid BH+?
b. At what pH is [BH+] = [B]?
c. Which is the principal species at pH 7.00?
d. Which is the principal species at pH 3.00?
2. (40 pts.) A buffer was prepared by dissolving 0.100 mol of H3N+CH2CH2N+H3 (pKa =
6.85) plus 0.050 mol of H3N+CH2CH2NH2 in 1.00 L.
a. (20 pts) Find the pH.
b. (20 pts) Would you add HCl 0.10 M or NaOH 0.10 M to bring the pH of this
buffer solution to a value of 6.35? Determine the volume of HCl or NaOH needed
to add to the buffer.
3. (40 pts.)You need to make a pH 5.0 buffer solution and you have the following reagents
available to you:
Acid Base (either in the form of salt or base)
HF pKa = 3.17 NaF
Lactic Acid pKa = 3.86 Sodium lactate
CH3COOH pKa = 4.73 CH3COONa
HOCl pKa = 7.52 NaOCl
NH4Cl pKa = 9.24 NH4OH
a. (20 pts) Which pair of these reagents listed above would you use to make the
buffer solution? Explain your answer.
b. (20 pts) In roughly what relative molar concentrations would you combine them?
Show your work for full credit.
