Gas Hydrates: Formation and Inhibition

This document contains 7 tutorial questions about natural gas hydrate formation and inhibition for a gas process engineering class. It asks about when hydrocarbon condensate removal is desirable, what natural gas hydrates are and their formation conditions, comparing different chemical hydrate inhibitors, calculating hydrate formation temperatures, and considering factors in hydrate inhibitor selection.

TUTORIAL CHAPTER 3
1. Removal of hydrocarbon condensate from natural gas may be desirable. Under what
circumstances would this be true?

2. What is natural gas hydrate and what components in natural gas form hydrates?

3. Name three conditions essential for hydrate formation and other conditions that tend to
promote (accelerate) hydrate formation

4. Compare all three types of chemical hydrate inhibitors.

5. Estimate the hydrate-formation temperature at 325 psia (22.4 bar) from the gas with
composition shown below: Compare the result obtained with equation and that with the
graph.
Component Mole fraction
CO2 0.002
N2 0.094
C1 0.784
C2 0.060
C3 0.036
i-C4 0.005
n-C4 0.019

6. A lean gas with a specific gravity of 0.73 leaves a gas-liquid separator at 100F and 600
psia saturated with water. The gas drops to 35F before reaching the next booster station.
Is hydrate formation possible between separator and the booster station without any
injection of hydrate inhibitor?

7. What would you consider in the selection of hydrate inhibitor to be used?
