ABSTRACT

I am doing my degree in Computer Science major in Software Engineering at University Tenaga

Nasional. Currently I am at the end of 2nd year semester where I need to go for industrial
training. I had a placement in e-Genting Holdings Sdn. Bhd. at Wisma Genting, Kuala Lumpur
and without any hassles I have successfully done it.

The main reason I chose e-Genting Holdings Sdn. Bhd. to do my trainee program is because I
wanted to get exposed to new working environment, experience and learn new IT related skills.
Besides, I decided to be independent and chose to work in a place which located far from my
campus. So Wisma Genting was my choice and I got it successfully. I challenged myself to learn
new IT skills and be a professional staff as I get exposed to new working environment and
lifestyle.

SYNOPSIS

This report is prepared on the basis of three- month practical experience at e-Genting Sdn. Bhd.,
Kuala Lumpur. This Internship has helped me to developed my confidence and improve my IT
related skills. Besides that, I had also received some useful critique from my host supervisor
during my trainee program in e-Genting. I had gain a lot of experience during my industrial
training program. I have learned to apply the IT skills and theories that I have learned in my
class. Since my trainee program is for about 3 months, I was assigned to few works like
resolving cases, performing windows migration, encryption for laptops and etc. On my 1st day of
training, one of my colleague who joined intern earlier than us explained everything about my
department. Dos and donts was further elaborated by him in order for us to be more conscious
on things that we does as an intern there.

My job scope can be narrowed to five main projects. First of all is user case. User will be having
some technical problems in their PC or laptops. Since not all users are from IT backgrounds, they
need us to assist them. So they need to lock a case regarding their problem with software, PC or
laptops. All I need to do is to check Remedy (Software) for cases locked by users and need to
solve it by going on site or by remote their PC to solve it.

Secondly my main job was to perform migration from windows XP to windows 7 pro. This need
to be done manually by going on site. I need to backup all user files since its company policy just
to ensure no any missing files complained by users. Then all I need to do is formatting their PCs
and change the operating system running windows XP to windows 7. All the standard
applications need to be installed and domain need to be joined. I further need to activate the

3
windows and transfer back all the backup files to the migrated PC. Printer need to be joined
again. This is the trickiest part because everything is in server for us to add it back to user PC.
There is chances to get some problems.

Another main job was that, encrypting laptops. It means, securing hard disk by performing
encryption on it. So that unauthorised users can never erase or get access to the hard disk. This
was done with the help of Symantec encryption software. Since this is not a major project for us
to focus on, we have given this project to another department after some time. We had a lot other
projects in pending.

Besides that, I need to troubleshoot hardware and software. Whenever user had some issues with
their PC, we need to rush to their place to solve it. Sometimes Ill remote if it is only related to
software. As if related to hardware, Ill bring the CPU, or laptop to my department and will fix it.
Sometimes it will be fixed at user site if it doesnt consume much time.

Last but not least, Ill be assigned to setup new PCs or laptops. So I need to install standard
software and custom software requested by users. Once after settle with that, I need to go to user
place and have to perform a full backup on their current PC or laptop and have to transfer it to
new PC or laptop. Later then domain and printer need to be joined to user PC. Thats all about
my job scope and I hope I have given a clear picture on how it works.

CONCLUSION/ RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation for the e-Genting Holding Sdn. Bhd.

e-Genting Holding Sdn. Bhd. is a great learning company for interns. It helps to improve and
develops working skills. I will definitely recommend e-Genting to all interns and I hope they
keep hiring interns with different educational background, to help build and improve their
knowledge apart from their studies.

Recommendation for University Tenaga Nasional

I would like to recommend Uniten, to extend the duration of internship program from 3 months
to 6 months. This is because most of the companies are afraid to hire interns due to risk of giving
long pending projects. Besides that, I would also like to recommend Uniten, to move backward
this industrial training subject to final year, final semester. This is because most of the company
are expecting interns to be a final year students due to the reason they might needing them to
work there as permanent staff. I hope Uniten will consider on all of these recommendation given
here.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The intern gained practical experience in applying IT skills and theories learned in university. Key skills developed include user case resolution, Windows XP to Windows 7 Pro migration, Symantec encryption for laptops, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues. Additionally, the intern enhanced communication skills, time management, decision-making, problem-solving abilities, and gained exposure to a real-life working environment through collaboration with e-Genting staff .

The projects required practical application of academic knowledge, such as resolving user cases, performing system migrations, and securing laptops through encryption. These tasks involved hands-on execution, critical thinking, and adaptation to real-world challenges, expanding the intern's skill set. Active participation in troubleshooting and system setup enriched problem-solving capabilities, expanded technical expertise, and reinforced the theoretical learning with practical experience .

The intern managed and prioritized workload by effectively applying time management strategies taught by the supervisor and experienced staff. By organizing daily tasks, such as user case resolutions, software troubleshooting, and system migrations, the intern ensured deadlines were met while maintaining quality outcomes. Prioritization was based on project urgency and complexity, balancing long-term assignments with short-term tasks to optimize productivity .

Engagement with real-world IT challenges, like troubleshooting hardware and software issues and performing system migrations, sharpened the intern's problem-solving skills. Continuous engagement with diverse project scenarios required innovative thinking and adaptive learning, improving their ability to identify solutions. The collaborative environment further encouraged decision-making proficiency under guided mentorship .

Mentoring played a crucial role in the intern's development, with supervisors providing guidance and constructive feedback, facilitating practical application of learned theories. The mentor's patience and advice enabled the intern to manage time effectively, bolster problem-solving skills, and build confidence. The supportive environment fostered by mentors and colleagues encouraged exploration and learning in a hands-on manner .

One challenge faced was ensuring no data loss during migration; this was addressed by manual backup of all user files before upgrading. Another issue was rejoining printers to the user PCs, as these had to be reconfigured from a central server. The intern had to meticulously follow company policies while dealing with potential data recovery problems, and attention to each unique setup was necessary to avoid technical errors .

The internship provided hands-on experience with relevant IT tasks such as Windows migration, troubleshooting hardware and software, and encryption projects, which helped in applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. The intern developed confidence, time management skills, and efficient problem-solving strategies while working in a team-oriented environment. Feedback from supervisors and real-time project involvement fostered a deeper understanding of professional expectations in IT .

The internship provided valuable exposure to a professional work environment, helping the intern evaluate if this career path met their interests and skills. Real-world IT problem solving and teamwork were highlighted, aligning with their academic knowledge and personal career goals. It confirmed their interest in continuing in IT, as they successfully applied and expanded upon their educational skills in a corporate setting .

Teamwork was vital to the intern's success, facilitating knowledge exchange and providing collective solutions to overcome technical challenges. Collaborating with experienced colleagues on tasks like multi-step migrations and troubleshooting, the intern gained insights from shared expertise, enabling efficient completion of complex assignments. The dynamic contribution of team members and mentors created a supportive atmosphere that fostered learning and effective task execution .

The three-month internship duration allowed the intern to acquire substantial technical skills and real-world experience. However, the brief period limited more complex project involvement and deeper skill development. Longer internships might allow for engagement in long-term projects, enhancing learning of advanced IT practices and solidifying professional relationships. The intern suggested extending internship duration to six months to alleviate such constraints and increase overall learning outcomes .
