Vocabulary Skills of Grade Seven Students Using Selected Philippine Poetry
CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM
Background and Purposes of the Study
The ability to speak and read is the most of the typical skills students should possess.
These requirements can fully accomplish by all of the students yet, not all of them can use
the language properly, say the right pronunciation and understand what they have read. In
this case, the students capabilities to learn new things may become limited and their
confidence to face challenges after graduation is also affected.
Young children have their natural way to communicate as they can easily adopt their
environment through observation. And then, they are engaged in a simple communication
through listening and speaking. And throughout the years, students can express their way
of communication through reading and writing. These skills are recognized as an advantage
for they can enhance their vocabulary and comprehend. However, there is still relative issue
about the needs of improvement, while students are developing as readers and writers.
Mostly in the areas of vocabulary which is the great way to comprehend.

The selection of methods, approaches, strategies and the media are taking important
role. Those are very important because those all can influence the students in learning such
as can create and generate their motivation. We know that motivation is a main factor on
the students success in learning. Motivation is like a spirit. It can motivate students to study
more and more because they have spirit in learning where students cannot feel bored and
frustrated but they feel happy, fun and enjoy the class.
When it comes in selecting of reading materials, students consider things such as
their purpose, interests, readability of the material and time for reading. Because of the
limited experiences of them, they are usually guided as to what reading materials may be
appropriate and easy to understand for them. Most of students read only the materials which
are they can relate to and give them enjoyment and that makes them motivate to read. Good
teacher must present a good method and appropriate materials to students which can
generate their urge to learn.
Literature is an authentic material. It is the expression of human nature and
significant human experiences from imaginative or creative. Then it is also a type of subject
that includes writing, reading and sometimes spelling. In literature there are some parts
namely: short story, drama, poetry, etc. The writer chooses an alternative method of ELT
which can be expected to generate students motivation that is poetry as a medium.
We study literature so that we can better appreciate our literary heritage. We can trace the
rich heritage of ideas handed down to us from our forefathers then we can understand

ourselves better and take pride in being Filipino. In the Philippine Poetry, centuries before
the Spaniards came, the Filipinos had their own traditions, folklores, mythologies and epics.
Stories of epic done in poetry displayed tremendous, vitality, color and imagination.
The reading and writing of poetry, classified as a literary activity, has helped to keep
this form of linguistic expression out of the typical EFL classroom. And then poems can
effectively be used in English Language classes to reinforce students knowledge of the
English Language- vocabulary and grammar.
According to William Wordsworth in Nsambatcoumar posted in Wikipedia (2011), he argues
that poetry is meant for enjoyment and pleasure. It appeals to our senses. In poetry, rhythm
is a universal phenomenon. The regular rhythm of poetry appeals to the child. It draws the
child more close to the language.
Based on this, the writer can conclude that poetry is an alternative method to
teaching and can be an alternative reading materials that student should engage. It makes
students feel more enjoyable and feel different atmosphere because they can create
something based on their feeling and imagination.
The researchers aim in conducting this study to measure the vocabulary skills of
Grade Seven student of University of Rizal System Tanay Campus Laboratory High School,
school year 2017-2018 using selected Philippine Poetry as the material for research.

Theoretical Framework
This study was attached on the Schema Theory. This theory proposes that when
individuals obtain knowledge, they attempt to fit that knowledge into some structure in
memory that helps them make sense of that knowledge. It also proposes that individuals
breakdown information into generalizable chunks which are then categorically stored in the
brain for later recall. Schema Theory is an active strategy coding technique necessary for
facilitating the recall of knowledge. As new knowledge is perceived, it is coded into either
pre-existing schema or organized into anew script. In essence schemata are organized
mental structures that aid the learners ability to understand and associate with what is being
presented to them. The use of specific schema theory strategy semantic mapping to
facilitate vocabulary development and comprehension for at risk readers.
Yule (1985) said that the key to the concept of coherence is not something which
exists in people. It is people who make sense of what they read and hear. They try to arrive
at an interpretation which is in line with their experience of the way the world is. Indeed, our
ability to make sense of what we read is probably only a small part of the general ability we
have make sense of what we perceive or experience in the world.

The theory is relevant to this study since the schema theory lies on the
relationship between the systematic level and schematic level that will work together for the
development of the students vocabulary knowledge.
Conceptual Framework
Figure 1 presents the conceptual framework model of the study about the
Vocabulary Skills of Grade Seven students in Laboratory High School of University of Rizal
System, Tanay Campus using the Philippine Poetry.
Frame 1 contains the input with the profile of the respondents in terms of age,
sex, school graduated from, monthly family income, availability of Philippine poetry at home,
interest for reading poetry. It also includes their performance in different vocabulary skills in
terms of synonyms, antonyms, context clues, and word blending
Frame 2 presents the process used in which the researchers sought permission
from the office of the Laboratory High School Principal that allow them to administered the
test that was validated by the experts in the field. The test was distributed to the Grade
Seven students in the Laboratory High School of University of Rizal System Tanay Main
Campus that reveals their vocabulary skills. The Data were tabled analyzed and interpreted
using the appropriate statistical tool.

they will lead to the input and if the main objectives will not be achieved there can still be
continuous connection until it reaches the aims to achieve. It serves as a part of the whole
process to complete the cycle of the study.

4. Students graduated from Public School are more exposed in Poetry.
5. Those who have lots of Philippine Poetry books at home perform well.
Scope and Limitations
This study was limited only to the Grade Seven Students in the Laboratory High
