High-Efficiency DC-DC Converter for Car Audio

The document proposes a new high-efficiency low-profile DC-DC converter for digital car audio amplifiers. The key advantages of the proposed converter are that it has: (i) minimized input filtering due to continuous input current, (ii) zero transformer excitation current from series capacitors, (iii) low voltage stress on secondary diodes, (iv) minimized EMI from zero-voltage and zero-current switching, and (v) reduced conduction loss due to lack of output inductor. The proposed converter achieves high efficiency from reduced losses and a low profile from smaller magnetic components.

To derive the output voltage equation, it is assumed that VL, VH, VSA,

In addition, the voltage stress of the secondary rectifier diodes is
clamped to the output voltage at 18 V. The measured efficiencies of
the proposed converter and the BHB converter are compared in Fig. 4.
At nominal input voltage, the proposed converter has a very high
efficiency of 88.24% compared with the BHB converter, which has
84.81%.
