RIZAL IN UST

UST is the Pontifical Royal, University of Santo


Tomas, the Catholic University of the Philippines.

Was founded on April 18, 1611 by


Archbishop Miguel de Benavides

Before Jose enrolled in UST, his older brother
Paciano had previously studied in the University.

Jose started in the university from


1877-1882

Paciano Mercado Rizal was born in


1851 and was ten years older than Jose

He had strong ties with the Dominican Order

Since Paciano used the family name Mercado, Jose was


told to take the last name of Rizal while entering UST

Father Jose Burgos was a nationalist priets, alumnus of the


University of Santo Tomas and a companion of Paciano

Rizals father, Don Francisco as well as Paciano
decided to send Jose for higher education in Manila

It is widely known that his mother, Dona Teodora was


opposed to Rizal studying in higher education

Dont send him to Manila again; he knows enough. If he


gets to know more, the Spaniards will cut off his head.

Don Francisco decided his son should attend the
UST, which was know as a prestigious institution that
was run by the Dominican Order

Rizal entered the university April 1877 where he studied


Philosophy and Letter

He chose this course for his first year because he was


unsure what he wanted to study

He also based his choice on the fact that his father
wanted this for him since he enjoyed the course himself

His freshman subjects were Cosmology, Metaphysics,


Theodicy and History of Philosophy

While studying at UST, Rizal was also finishing


surveying course at the Ateneo de Manila

At Ateneo, he obtained gold medals in agriculture
and topography since he excelled in all his subjects
in the university

He was deprived of the title of surveyor on November 25,


1881 even though he passed his final examination in the
course because he was a minor at 17 years old

He gained the title of Surveyor and Expert Assessor on


September 30, 1881 after presenting his credentials in
Ateneo

Rizal was also active in extra-curricular activities:


President of the Academy of Spanish Literature
Secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences
Secretary of the Marian Congregation

After his first year, Rizal consulted the Director of Ateneo de


Manila, Rev. Fr. Pablo Ramon, asking him what course he
should take

Rev. Fr. Ramon advised him to take up the course
of Medicine, which Rizal had listened and therefore
enrolled

Jose also hoped that in enrolling in Medicine, he could


help his mother and her failing eyesight
