Writing the lesson plan: Blog
Translating thoughts into a plan of action
_____________________________________________
Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson:
(Provide Standard number and statement)
Pennsylvania Academic Standards: Ecology
4.1 Ecology
4.1.4.D: Explain how specific adaptations can help organisms survive in their environment.
Pennsylvania Academic Anchors: Science and Technology and Engineering
S4.B.2.1: Identify and explain how adaptations help organisms to survive.
S4.B.2.1.1: Identify characteristics for plant and animal survival in different environments (e.g.,
wetland, tundra, desert, prairie, deep ocean, forest).
Lesson Objective(s)
(Stated in observable and measurable terms)
Students will respond to an open-ended question with an appropriate answer with a reasonable
paragraph response. Students will also use correct spelling and grammar.
Assessment Plan
(What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)
A rubric will be used to assess student’s response. Students will have written a proper response
(including following the prompt’s rules), using at least 3 complete sentences and no spelling or
grammatical errors.
Materials:
A computer with internet capabilities will be needed.
Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:
Students will be encouraged to work at their ability. Students may write the animal, then the
adaptation (and if possible, the student can develop this idea into simple sentences).
Enrichment Techniques:
Students will be encouraged to think “outside the box” and brainstorm different animals not from our
area. Students will also need to find as many adaptations as they can. Finally, students will need to
write developed paragraphs.
Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL
students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson):
Students will be encouraged to choose an animal that is from our area (an animal that the student is
familiar with). Students will think about the animal’s coloring, and why their teeth are important.
Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:
After learning about animal adaptations, students will discuss different animals in our area with
adaptations.
Detailed Teaching Sequence:
(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson.
Bulleted statements are preferred)
1. Students read and discuss the animal adaptation lesson.
2. Students discuss different animals in our area and their adaptations.
3. Students respond to an open-ended question posted by the teacher. This question is posted
online, and students submit information. The teacher reads and “okays” the post before it is
posted.
4. Students may read other posts.
Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities
Students work independently on this lesson, then are graded using a rubric.
Closure:
Students read and discuss other students’ posts. Posts will be discussed in the next class.
