Research question/purpose: The objective of this outreach service was to provide initial psychological
counseling free of charge and without appointment. Another objective was to refer persons for
appropriate treatment and follow-up by routine health care services. This research showed the
advantages of integrating epidemiology in the development of strategy for mental health and
psychosocial support in the aftermath of natural catastrophes.
Research method: correlational survey study.
Sampling method : purpossive sampling
Variables:
1. Dependent variables: Nurse competence level.
Using the nurse competence scale (NCS) that consist of 73 items organized into 7 categories.
Measured with visual analog scale (0-100 mm) with values 25 (weak), 50 (moderate), 75 (good and
excellent).
The respondent also asked the nursing competence level relevant to their work with 4-point
scale (0 = not applicable, 1 = used very seldom, 2 = used occasionally, 3 = used very often)
The instrument's (NCS) validity and reliability has been tested. The content of validity using
the expert and pilot study with cross sectional design. The internal consistency varied for each 7
categories.
2. Independent variables:
Factors that influence the nurse competence.
Result:
1. The nurses assessed their overall competence as good (56.0) and have different categories range
from 47.3 to 63.7
2. Competence profiles varied in different work environment. Overall competence level was the
highest in high dependency unit, and the lowest at emergency department unit
3. The biggest influence the competence development is nurse themselves. The lowest is superior,
still they have positive corelation to preceptorship program's statisfaction
Reflection
This article would help me through my future research in Indonesia. The articles show the
instrument that I need. This article just study about the competence level in nurse perception. I believe
in Indonesia this would give fresh air about emergency nursing and nurse competence.
I need to find the instrument that mention in this articles so I can study more if this instrument
can use in my future research. But I have to double check the instrument whether the instrument could
be used in rural area hospital in my country.
