{Walking fast towards a big tree on the edge of a baseball field, the grass is
yellow and brown, crunching beneath their feet. It’s hot, and the sky has only one
small cloud. Jean and Neil walk pretty close together, and they are swinging their
arms as they walk.}
Jean: I don’t get it. How did you manage that?
Neil: Uh, I really don’t know myself… I mean, I’ve never hit that far before!
Jean: Ugh… well let’s just look for the ball. Jeez, I thought you said you were horrible at
baseball! But you just nailed a homerun your first try!
Neil: Really Jean! I was telling the truth! I played baseball a bit in Springfield for my school,
but I really stunk. Like, cut-early-stunk.
Jean: Then go back and show ‘em what you just did! Jesus! We haven’t even gotten to where
it fell yet.
Neil: Haha, maybe, maybe. But really, I couldn’t do that again.
Jean: Well it looked like it fell into this tree- OH CRAP!
Neil: What is it- oooohhhhhh crap is right.
Jean: What should we do?!?!
Neil: Umm, ummm, let’s just go!
Jean: But that’s Carlos’s ball!
Neil: Ahhhh, crap!… seriously…?
{some silence and tense breathing, awkward}
Jean: I’m gonna get the ball.
Neil: What the hell? No way Jean! J-just-what?!?
Jean: Well it doesn’t look like this guy’s home. And this house is sort of run down. I mean,
just look at this {She slides the window upwards} It’s not that bad. Check it out, we
broke his window, but now we can just go in and get the ball. We don’t have to pay for
anything, we don’t get caught.
Neil: Aggghhh… Jean, you- fine, whatever. Just do it. But I’m not going in there.
Jean: Hmph. {goes in the house. It’s a kitchen} Wow, there are a lot of cobwebs in here.
{opens up the fridge} Haha, empty fridge. I really didn’t know there was an empty house
here!
Neil: Agh! Jean! What are you doing! Come on, I thought we were fricking leaving this
place. I don’t wanna get caught or anything.
Jean: You’re such a pansy! I went in and got the ball and everything, and there’s no one here!
Who’s gonna get us if there’s no one to see, huh?
Neil: I just don’t like staying here… jeez.
Jean: Neil, come in here. Come on. I dare you.
Neil: … (hrmmm)… Rrgh, fine. (grumbles) {goes through window}
{Jean closes fridge door}
Jean: (Quietly) Neil…
Neil: What, did you say something?
Jean: Uh, no. Forget it.
Neil: ‘K
(Pause)
Neil: Um, Jean? Why are we still in here?
Jean: (slightly abrasive) Because I feel like it, okay!?
Neil: Ah, okay. Fine, it’s no big deal... jeez. {Jean goes further into the house}
{Neil paces for a moment, and then follows Jean. He finds her sitting against the wall
with her head in her knees}
Neil: Uh, Jean? What’s wrong?
{Jean raises her head and clasps her knees}
Jean: Neil… can you sit with me? Please?
Neil: Uhhh, okay.
{Neil sits down slowly, in the same position as Jean} (Silence)
Neil: Umm, Jean?
Jean: Just sit with me. {lays her head on Neil’s shoulder}
Neil: …
{Jean breathes slowly and calmly, almost as if she’d fallen asleep.}
Jean: … I wish you could stay with me forever Neil…
{Neil is silent. After some time, he slowly moves his arms from around his knees and
gently clasps Jean’s hand.}
Neil: (whispering, gently) I’ll stay…
{They shift even closer together in the dusty hall, as sounds of other kids yelling faintly
outside fade out. The scene moves out of the window, past the large magnolia next to the
house, outwards into a pan of the town and the sky, then to the sun.}
