Performance Tasks in Math and Physics

The document contains instructions for three performance tasks: 1) Modeling the monthly SSS contribution structure in the Philippines using a piecewise function. 2) Analyzing a rational function modeling carbon dioxide pressure based on volume, including finding asymptotes and intercepts, graphing the function, and explaining the significance of the asymptotes. 3) Designing an original board game that utilizes an inverse function, illustrating the mechanics and providing an example on separate paper.

(Write your answer legibly in a graphing paper. You will be graded based on the rubric.

PERFORMANCE TASK NO. 1

DIRECTIONS: Based on the existing schedule of SSS Contribution in the Philippines, use piecewise function to
represent the structure of monthly contribution by giving

a) The function equation (piecewise function);

b) A table showing some function values;
c) A graph; and
d) Description of the graph.

PERFORMANCE TASK NO. 2

5125000 2 449000 +19307

Consider the rational function = . This function is based on the Vander Waals
125 2 (100043)
equation for predicting the pressure of a gas as a function of at a fixed temperature. The function above models
the pressure of the carbon dioxide in terms of volume if the temperature is 500 kelvins.

1. What are the vertical asymptote(s) of the function?

2. What are the horizontal asymptote(s) of the function?
3. What are the -intercept(s) of the function?
4. What is the -intercept of the function?
5. Sketch the graph of the function, indicate the asymptotes and intercepts. What do you think is the domain of
the function given this context?
Hint: Remember that pressure and volume cannot be negative.
6. Explain the significance of the vertical asymptote in practical terms.
7. Explain the significance of horizontal asymptote.

PERFORMANCE TASK NO. 2

Make an illustration of a board game that uses an inverse function. Show the mechanics and answers of the game on
separate graphing paper. REPETITION OF GAME IS NOT ALLOWED.
