Particle Nature of Matter Worksheet

This document provides instructions for a practical experiment to observe samples in different states of matter and explain their behavior using particle theory. Students are asked to look at samples without opening containers, identify if each is a solid, liquid, or gas, and note their observations. They then choose one sample to draw diagrams showing the particle arrangement before and after gently compressing the syringe. The goal is to use ideas about particles to explain the behavior of substances in different states.

Practical: Particle nature of matter Worksheet 2

Objective:
To observe given sample and decide whether each is in the solid, liquid or gas state
To use the ideas about particles and explain the behaviour of substances in the
solids, liquids and gas states

Instructions:

Look carefully at a sample. If you wish, tip the container. Do not open the syringe.
Decide whether the sample is a solid, liquid or gas
You may press the plungers of the syringes (use caution) very gently

Questions: 1. Complete the below table to describe your observations

Sample number Is it solid, liquid or gas? Why you made this decision
and name (Write the properties of the sample)
Name of the student: _______________________________________________________________

2. Choose one sample. Use ideas of particles and draw a diagram inside syringe

3. Compress each of the syringes gently. Describe your observation and use ideas of
particles and draw the diagram inside the syringe when a sample is compressed
