Biochemical Statistics and Analysis

This document defines common descriptive statistics used to summarize data, including measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), measures of variability or dispersion (range, interquartile range, variance, standard deviation), and other location measures (quartiles, deciles, percentiles). It provides three word problems applying these statistics to biochemistry data on albumin levels, SIRT6 mRNA levels, and creatinine levels.

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Measures of Central Tendency Measures of Variability / Dispersion

Range
Mean: = or =

Interquartile Range (IQR)
Median: the middle observation
Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD)
Mode: the observation(s) which occurred most
frequently
Variance

Measures of Other Location Standard Deviation

Quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4)
Coefficient of Variation (CV) /
Deciles (D1, D2, D3, D4, , D10) Relative Standard Deviation (RSD)

Percentiles (P1, P2, P3, P4, , P100)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Examples:
Word Problem 1: Albumin is a protein made by the liver that keeps fluid from leaking out of blood vessels,
nourishes tissues, and transports hormones, vitamins, drugs, and substances like calcium throughout the body.
In normal patients, albumin ranges from 35.0 to 50.0 g/L. Suppose that albumin (in g/L) of seven randomly
selected patients with jaundice were recorded and results are as follows:
32.0 21.2 15.5 29.5 39.2 39.2 27.8
Compute for the following:
1. Mean 4. 1st Quartile 7. Range

8. Interquartile Range

9. Variance
2. Median 5. 3rd Decile

10. Standard Deviation

3. Mode 6. 75th Percentile

11. Coefficient of
Variation

Word Problem 2: Alzheimers disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia and age-
related neurodegenerative disease. In the study of Jung et al. (2016), its relationship with
SIRT6, a member of the mammalian sirtuin family of anti-aging genes, was reported. Suppose
that the mRNA level of SIRT6 in the frontal cortex of six selected AD patients are as follows:
0.63 0.70 0.73 0.63 0.73 0.66
Compute for the following:
1. Mean 4. 3rd Quartile 7. R
ange

8. Interquartile Range

2. Median 5. 7th Decile 9. Variance

10. Standard Deviation

3. Mode 6. 25th Percentile

11. Coefficient of Variation

Word Problem 3: The kidneys maintain the blood creatinine in a normal range [70 to 120 in mol/L for males, and
50 to 90 mol/L for females]. Thus, elevated creatinine level suggests impaired kidney function. Suppose that
serum creatinine (in mol/L) of all the eight male inpatients with diabetic nephropathy were recorded and results
are as follows:
125 120 135 200 175 115 115 143
Compute for the following:
1. Mean 4. 1st Quartile 7. Interquartile Range

2. Median 8. Variance

5. 17th Percentile

3. Mode 9. Standard Deviation

6. Range

10. Coefficient of Variation
