Natalie Goodman's Journey in Musical Theater

Natalie is a 16-year-old straight-A student who constantly pushes away her boyfriend Henry with drug use and avoidance due to her family issues. Her mother suffered from bipolar disorder made worse by the death of Natalie's older brother Gabe before she was born, causing her mother to be unable to love Natalie the same way. At the end of the show, Natalie gets closure by speaking honestly with her mother, with her mother admitting how difficult it was to love Natalie as much as Gabe due to her mental health issues but that she tried her best to be a good mother.

Natalie Goodman:

My character Natalie is a sixteen year old straight A student. Before she was born, her

parents had another child Gabe who passed at the age of 2. Her mother had already suffered

from bi-polar disorder but this worsened when her son passed. Because of this, when Natalie

was born, her mother could not love her the way she loved Gabe. Natalie knew about this

growing up and did whatever she could to be the perfect daughter for her parents. She

graduated school a year early and got a full ride to Yale for music. Eventually while at school

she meets a boy named Henry. Although Henry is clearly perfect for her she constantly

pushes him away with her drug use and overall avoidance of him. She is afraid that if she lets

him in too close that she will get hurt and hell want to leave once he realizes how next to

normal her family is. She is also worried that she too could end up like her mother and does

not want Henry to deal with that. However, through all she puts Henry through he does stay

with her. He wants to support her through the stress of her life and her mothers. At the end of

the show Natalie finally has a moment to speak honestly with her mother. She got the closure

that she needed to let her mom know that she does love her and vise versa. Her mother

admits to how hard it was with Natalie growing up to give her the love and attention she was

able to give Gabe and reminds her that she tried her hardest to be a good mother.
