INVERSION

We use inversion to give emphasis.


We use it after some expressions when they are at the
beginning of a sentence:
never, seldom, rarely, hardlywhen, no soonerthan, little, never
before
not onlybut also, on no occasion, nowhere, barely, under no
circumstances

Transformations
[Link] soon as he had done his homework he watched TV with his friend.
SOONER No...he watched TV with his friend.
[Link] had never heard such a beautiful voice before.
BEFORE [Link] a beautiful voice.
[Link] mustnt touch these exhibits under any circumstances.
NO Under...these exhibits.
[Link] havent seen a more handsome man anywhere.
ELSE Nowhere..a more handsome man.
[Link] is a good teacher and a good translator as well.
ONLY [Link] but hes also a good translator.

KNOW Little..it was a lecture.

When the following expressions begin a sentence, we use inversion


In the main clause:
Only after, only by, only if, only when, not until
Example: Only if it rains, will he go for a walk.

Transformations
[Link] could only keep the patients calm by giving them tranquilizers.
BY Only....we keep the patients calm.
[Link] will buy a new house if she saves more money.
WILL Only if she...a new house.
[Link] was only after Id entered the shop that I realized Id forgotten the wallet.
DID Only after Id entered the [Link] the wallet.
[Link] had to find the key to open the door.
COULD Only by....open the door.
Inversion in Conditionals
1st Conditional: Should you meet him, tell him to come to me.
2nd Conditional: Were I you, I would run more.
3rd Conditional: Had I come to the party, I wouldnt have danced.

Rewrite these sentences omitting if
