Timber Column Design for Water Tank

The document provides design parameters for a timber column project to support a water tank placed on a square timber deck. It specifies that the column must be designed using the student's last 4 digits as N to determine: 1) the timber grade from N4, 2) the water height hw from N3, 3) the column height H from N5, and 4) the assumed weight of the empty deck and tank is 20 kN. A diagram shows the square deck, water tank above it, and the column height H.

Design (Timber) Assignment #2
A water tank with height of water hwis placed on a square shaped timber deck of thickness
100mm. the length of a side of the deck is 2.5m. the height of the base of the water tank above
the ground is H. The base of the columns may be assumed to be fixed in both position and
direction. The deck may be assumed to be much stiffer than the columns.
Design a suitable section for the timber columns.
Determine the relevant design parameters as follows:
Let the last four digits of your student number represent the number N
1) Grade of the timber: Divide N by 4 and let the remainder be N4
N4 0 1 2 3
Timber grade C18 C20 C22 C24

2) Height of water in the tank, hw: Divide N by 3 and let the remainder be N3
N3 0 1 2
Height,hw (m) 1.5 2.0 2.5

3) Column height, H: Divide N by 5 and let the remainder be N5

N5 0 1 2 3 4
Height, H (m) 9 8.5 8 7.5 7

4) Weight of deck and empty tank: Assume this is 20 kN.
