Requirements:

1. It should be no shorter than one page long. The one page requirement begins when you
start to write your journal, not with your label.
2. One paragraph is a summary. The other is a critical examine of your novel. Writing a
summary will receive a grade no higher than a C-.

Prompt #2 - New things youve learned about a culture/place from the novel

Steinbeck paints a picture of what it was what like during the 30s, particularly focusing
on men and their issues. He suggests that the overall culture was cancerous where men snipped
at each other, blaming others of thievery or mischievous acts. When George and Lenny arrive
and greet the boss, George is accused of pulling something over him. George, himself, even
accuses Candy of giving him a contaminated bed. The boss son, Curly, warns them to stay away
from his wife. Within the first two chapters, Steinbeck establishes that people are afraid of losing
their dignity and pride, and suggests that no one can be trusted. It helped me to recognize that the
Great Depression wasnt just about losing money, but it had more to do with a constant
oppressive mindset that hovered over their daily lives with no sense of hope in sight. It really
wasnt just a one event deal. It was a belief, a way of life.
