Garrett GT06 vs MGT12 Turbo Comparison

The document discusses turbocharging options for a Formula racing car. It compares the Garrett MGT12 and GT06 turbochargers, selecting the MGT12 as it can reach optimal boost levels in the mid-high RPM range, while the GT06 may spool up too early. An air-to-air aluminum intercooler is also selected over a water-to-air system due to its lighter weight and high heat transfer properties. Simulation software will be used to determine the most efficient turbocharger configuration.

Design Report Turbocharging
Abstract: Turbocharging is one of the two main methods of forced induction, the other being supercharging. Turbocharging
involves compressing air using a compressor which is connected to another turbine driven by exhaust gases. Turbocharging is
generally used to improve efficiency, and increase power and torque.

Two turbochargers were selected for comparison: the

Garrett MGT12 and the Garrett GT06. These are the two
turbochargers available as a sponsorship from Honeywell. Worcester Polytechnic Institute
The MGT12 turbo may take more time to spool up as [Link]
compared to the GT06, but the other components such as project-042910-
the exhaust and intake can be tuned for earlier peak torque 103500/unrestricted/2010_WPI_Turbo_FASE_Paper
with a flatter torque curve. One of the major advantages of .pdf
these turbochargers is the presence of their internally built
wastegates which control the maximum boost pressure of
intake air.
Simulation softwares such as Ricardo can be used to
determine which of the two turbochargers are better and
more efficient.
The MGT12 turbo is selected to be used on the car as it
can spool up slightly later and can reach optimum boost
levels at the mid-high rpm range. The disadvantages of
this turbocharger are size, weight and more spooling time.
Although the GT06 may be lighter, it being smaller means
that it would reach max boost earlier than required and
choke the intake and exhaust, reducing the efficiency at
higher RPMs.

INTERCOOLER
Two types of intercoolers were considered: air-to-air and
water-to-air. Air-to-air intercoolers have the intake air
passing through tubes which are surrounded by fins. This
works just like a radiator and ambient air flow cools the
hot intake air. This also improves efficiency as cooling the
air increases its density. An aluminum intercooler is
selected for its light weight and high heat transfer
properties. Air-to-air intercooling is selected as water-to-air
cooling increases weight and at higher temperatures, water
will also have to be cooled to maintain efficiency.
