The United Nations Conference on Trade and


Development (UNCTAD) was established in 1964 as a
permanent intergovernmental body.
It is the principal organ of the United
Nations General Assembly. It deals with Trade,
investment and development issues. The organizations
objective are:- To maximize the trade investment and
development countries and assist them in their efforts
to integrate into the world economy on equitable basis.
One of the principal achievements of
UNCTAD has been to conceive the Generalised system
of preferences (GSP). It was argued in UNCTAD that to
promote exports of manufactured goods from
developing countries, it would be necessary to offer
special tariff concessions to such exports.
The creation of UNCTAD in 1964 was
based on concerns of developing countries over the
international markets, multi-national corporations, and
great disparity between developed nations and
developing nations.

To promote international trade between developed


and developing countries.
To formulate principles and policies on international
trade and related problems of economy.
To negotiate trade agreements.
To review the coordination of activities of the other
united Nations institutions in the field of
international trade.
To functions as a center for a harmonious trade and
related documents in development policies of
government.
To make proposals for putting its principal and
policies into effect.
To accelerate the rate of economic growth of the
developing countries.
Special international programs to help least
developing countries and international targets.
To give important role of primary commodities and
natural resources for developing countries.
It also took effort to established and expand the
export earning of these countries.
