Community Diagnosis
World Health Organization defines health as the state of physical, mental, social well-being
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is also one of the basic human rights. It is
something that should be within everyones access and should lie in everyones hands.
Apparently, this has not always been the case for every individual and every community.
Health is the interplay of many social determinants. Diet, lifestyle, environment, culture,
beliefs, practices and politics are just but some of the factors that keep the people of Barangay
Poblacion from attaining their optimum level of health. In the house-to-house survey
conducted, majority of the population go to manghihilots and resort to herbal remedies first
before consulting the RHU. In worse scenarios, there are even those who diagnose their own
sickness and self-medicate. On the list of priorities for budget allocation, health, unfortunately,
is not included in their priorities.
The team has been assigned in Puroks 5, 7, 8 and 11 of Barangay Poblacion, Lake Wood.
Puroks 5, 7 and 8 are situated in the rugged mountain slopes while Purok 11 is across the lake.
Puroks in the mountain slopes have areas that are known to be landslide-prone during heavy
rainfalls and thus pose health hazards to the community. And on the list of leading causes of
morbidity, Soft Tissue Injuries ranked 3rd. People verbalized the need to learn First Aid and
emergency procedures that they can perform when the need arises. On the other hand, Purok
11 residents express their concern of their need also to learn Basic Health Emergency
procedures because they are situated in an area where the RHU is less accessible as compared
to other puroks.
Barangay Poblacion as a whole, is a highly agricultural area with __% of its work force
makes farming their primary source of income. Despite having the advantage of rich natural
resources, the community has not fully capitalized the potential of their resources through
innovative, low-cost organic farming and other alternatives, thus resulting to major percentage
of families below the poverty line. Their low-income also affected the communitys health and
health seeking behavior.
The barangay houses the municipalitys center for health, the Rural Health Unit, but people
seem to not fully maximize the health services it offers for various reasons. Prenatal visits and
immunizations are in good statistics but records show otherwise for the number of Facility-
Based Deliveries even with the existing regulations and the presence of the Halfway House.
90% of pregnant women still prefer to deliver at home having untrained birth attendants. Child
health also shows good record on child immunization, but it is malnutrition that is the
communitys major problem. ________. Among the leading causes of morbidity also were
Acute Respiratory Infections and Acute Gastroenteritris. These disease conditions reflect
largely on the living condition of the people in the community.
Hypertension is also among the disease condition that cripples the community. In fact, it
ranked first in the leading causes of morbidity. More than half of the communitys population
showed an elevated blood pressure in the random BP checking done during the house-to-
house interview. Hypertension mirrors the lifestyle of the community: their diet, exercise
regimen and smoking. The people also verbalized deficient knowledge in this disease
condition.
The environmental sanitation also is one major factor that affects health. Many medical
conditions can arise from an unsanitary environment. Puroks 5,7,8 and 11 have a common
complainthe inadequacy of the present garbage collection system. The barangay has,
accordingly, a once-a-week garbage collection utilizing the municipalitys dump; truck but this
has not been maintained for months now due to fuel shortage. This forced the people to go
back to their previous garbage disposal practices.
With the existence of the above said problems which were confirmed during the surveys
and by the community during the assembly, the team hereby diagnose Puroks 5,7,8 and 11 of
Barangay Poblacion, Lake Wood, ZDS UNHEALTHY.
