Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was born on july 9th, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico city, Mexico where she was

raised for the majority of her life. She had a good childhood until the age of 6 until she was

diagnosed with polio which meant she had to be bedridden for 9 months. Her right leg was

permanently damaged as she overcame her illness but her dad still influenced her to play sports

as any healthy kid would. Frida was accepted into the National Preparatory School where there

was only a handful of girls. She was recognized for her clothing taste that was very traditional

and vibrant and had a determined yet loving spirit.

She met her husband, Diego Rivera, at the Preparatory school who she did everything

with until one day she was on a bus when there was a crash and she was impaled by a steel

handrail in her lower back which caused her to be in the hospital for a quite long time. When she

was recovering she began painting, she finished a self portrait and her Diego influenced Frida to

continue painting. She joined The Mexican Communist Party and the Young Communist League

along with her soon to be husband Diego. She began another piece of art called Henry Ford

Hospital which showed her in a hospital bed with objects floating around her such as a pelvis, a

snail, a flower, and a fetus showing her life with accident and her many marriages that took

place. She began being noticed and traveled around the U.S to art shows to show off her many

pieces of artwork she worked on over time.

Frida and Diego got divoced but they got back together in 1940 which wasnt a suprise to

anyone. She was asked by the mexican govermwnt to do 5 portrait of memeralbl e women from

the past but she was unable to finish the project becaause her father, who was like her bestfriend,

pasted away. She still continued to paint but fell in to a great depresion and ended up in a

hospital beacause she tried to commit suicide. She then developed bronchial pneumonia and her
health countinued to get worse and worse. Frida Kahlo died on July 3rd, 1954 right before her

47th birthday from Pulmonary Embolism in her little blue house that is now a mueseum that is

filled with her art work. Frida is seen as a icon for women to this day and in 2002, there was a

movie dedicated to her life and work.

Frida Khalo painted a picture called Poor little deer in 1946 and it shows a wounded

deer, with Fridas face on it, and it had many arrows in its back. She painted this picture because

she had back surgery done in New York to stop the oain in her lower back. Unfortunetly the

surgery failed and left her in even more pain than she was in before, both physically and

emotionally. She wrote on the bottom corner of the painting the word karma meaning destiny

or fate, following as effect from cause. She used her pet deer, Granizo, as a model for this

artwork. She had many animals that she treated as her own children due to the fact that she

was unable to have kids, which also added on to her depression.
