Soldier Pile Shoring Design Calculations

This document summarizes the design calculations for a soldier pile wall as a temporary earth retaining system for a proposed substation in Colombo. Two lateral supporting options were considered. Soil conditions and properties were presented, including loose sand at 2m depth and dense sand at 5m depth. Loads on the retaining wall including a 10 kN/m2 surcharge, 15.5 kN/m2 soil pressure, and 15.7 kN/m2 water pressure were calculated. SAP2000 software was used to analyze a 1m strip of the retaining wall with a 75x150x6 I section. Results showed props should be placed at 5m intervals to support the wall.

1 Introduction

This short report presents the design calculations of the proposed soldier pile wall as a temporary
earth retaining system for the proposed substation at Colombo.

Two options have been considered in terms of the lateral supporting.

Draw a sketch here with AUTOCAD

Subsoil condition

Depth (m) Soil type SPT Soil subgrade reaction (kN/m3)

2 Loose sand 7 560

5 Dense sand 35 2800

Properties of soil

Soil dry density = 18 kN/m3

Soil wet density = 22 kN/m3

Ka = 0.33

Soil subgrade reaction has been taken as 80 x SPTN

2 Loading

Consider a surcharge of 10 kN/m2. Following pressures will apply on a unit width of shoring.

3 Analysis

SAP2000 software was used.

1m strip of the retaining wall was considered.
75x150x6 I section was taken as per the supporting element.
