Film Prop Design: Pastiche & Parody Analysis

The document discusses three props - a marmalade jar, packet of cigarettes, and bottle of whiskey - being designed and produced for a film set in the 1960s. The props utilize concepts of pastiche and parody. The marmalade and cigarettes aim to feel factual for the time period, while opinions on the whiskey were mixed as to whether it achieved romanticizing the 1960s.

still readily available in todays industry.

The marmalade label and whiskey label would be

printed onto a light weight, matt coated stock, common
among food packaging during this time. The jar lid of the
marmalade is bare metal as coating of metal jar lids was
uncommon during this time. The hip glass bottle was
most appropriate for the whiskey prop as this is portable
and would be more likely to be carried in a suitcase more
than a larger bottle.

of heavy weight. The carton would fold at the top and

cigarettes during this time.

The production methods must coincide with the year the

Reception

The props where shown to a focus group who answered

a series of question about them.

The group were asked what aspects of films can

romanticise the past. The setting of a film is the second
most popular aspect that the audience feels romanticises
the past in films. The music and score being the first.

The people that viewed the marmalade and cigarettes

agreed that they dont romanticise the 1960s as they
seem factual and use techniques from the time such as
block colours.

There was mixed opinions about whether or not the

whiskey prop achieved the romanticism of the 1960s.
Some felt that it needed more detail and decoration
whereas others felt it was too clean which made it
romanticise the 1960s.

Overall many people felt that romanticising films was not

a bad thing as films are a means of escapism.
