HDF 190: FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSIPRED TO EXCELLENCE

LEADERSHIP MINOR SPRING 2017

LEARNING CONTRACT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths in an


organizational/interpersonal setting that aligns with the mission, vision,
values and sponsored programs and activities of URIs Center for
Student Leadership Development.

Activity: Multicultural Overnight Program

Annotation: The activity I participated in for my leadership contract


was the Multicultural overnight program. This program is lead by
D.R.I.V.E here at URI. During this program, students who are seniors in
high school that have been accepted to URI can come for a day/night
to see the school and learn more about it.

Once the students arrived at the multicultural center in the morning we


did some icebreaker activities. After the icebreakers we split up into
smaller, more personal groups. Each group had about two students
from URI along with about 6 or 7 incoming college freshmen.
Surprisingly enough, talking about my experiences and myself so far
here at URI I actually learned a lot more about myself. I really enjoyed
being on the other side of things. I remember coming to accepted
students day last year before coming here and I was really stressed out
and anxious. While telling my story I wanted to be as most helpful as I
could to try to ensure the students that URI is an amazing school to
chose. I was very empathetic while listening to these students and I
really tried to connect with them on another level to make them feel
the most comfortable they could.

It was really interesting to connect with these high school seniors and
hear how all of them brought a different story to the table. I really
connected with one student named Sarah who shared a lot of similar
interests as me. I ended up giving Sarah my cell phone number incase
she had any questions about URI. She was very appreciative and it
seemed to take some stress off of her. This was a really rewarding
experience to empathize with these students seeing as I was in their
position only a year ago.
