Question 2
How does your media product represent social groups?
For our thriller based heavily on the era of classic film noir we decided
to focus the representations of social groups authentically, similar to that
of groups depicted between 1930 1960, within our thriller we primarily
represented age groups and different genders, we also decided that we
would convey a simple representation of these groups to easily show the
binary opposition between the genders.
Gender
To respond accurately to the authentic style of
film noir, we decided to evoke the idea of an
emasculated male character to fit into the
dominant male stereotype within the genre.
Additionally, the use of the anti-hero trope in our
thriller fits perfectly into the constraints of the crime thriller sub-genre we
chose, similar to characters such as Dirty harry, the title role in the series
of films from 1971 1988, whos character also holds elements of a dirty
anti-hero persona.
For our representation of women, we wanted to retain the authentic style,
which in turn affected how we represented the character of Alison. To keep
the thriller authentic we decided to use specific costume choices to
represent her as a traditionally sexualised character, to achieve this we
dressed Alison in a slightly revealing but expensive, modern-style dress
and specifically, red shoes, which connote the idea of danger and passion
Age
For our representation of age, we decided to best represent our social group of
16-24 year olds in the same vein as seen in other crime-thriller of the sub-genre,
this involved showing the hard life of young people with criminal interests. For
example, this also showed young people as having different interests, be it
stopping crime or indulging themselves in the high-life of the criminal world.
