IELTS Listening:

The IELTS Listening Test is the same for the Academic and
General Training modules. You listen to language spoken in a
social or academic context and answer a series of questions.
The tape is played only once so you have to practice
sufficiently beforehand to pick up whats being said the first
time around.

The listening test is divided into four sections with 10 questions

in each part (a total of 40 questions). This module lasts about
30 minutes. You get an extra 10 minutes at the end to transfer
your answers to the answer sheet.

IELTS LISTENING - QUESTION TYPES:

The listening test measures how well you can listen for main
ideas, specific information, supporting information, facts and
opinions. You will find a variety of question types:

multiple choice
short answer
sentence completion
notes/diagram/flow chart completion
matching
classification

The variety of question types means that you sometimes need

to write in the answer in your own writing, versus simply
choosing the right answer. This is important because in such
cases, you also need to spell correctly or the answer will
be marked wrong. Even a small error can cause you to lose
marks. For example, if the answer is "hat"; and you write
"hats", it may be marked wrong.
Success mantra IELTS guide
1 | Page
You also have to make sure you include the correct information.
If the answer is "Green hats" and you write only "hats", you
may also lose points.

You will get a better sense of how precise you need to be by

doing as many practice listening exams as possible before your
actual test. Believe it or not, you will improve with practice,
though it might seem impossible at first. Your ear and your
concentration can be trained. Over time, you will improve but
only if you remain patient and move steadily towards your goal
of the highest score possible.
SPEECH STYLES:

Each of the four sections of the IELTS Listening Test focuses on

a different type of speech, as shown below:

Section 1 A social or transactional dialogue 2 speakers

Section 2 A topic or short speech on a general topic 1
speaker
Section 3 A conversation in an academic context 2-4
speakers
Section 4 An academic lecture 1 speaker

IELTS Tips Listening:

The accents of the speakers on the tape are

primarily British. This means you must become
accustomed to understanding the nuances of such accents. If
you have been watching a lot of American television, (shows
such as Friends, for example) it will not really help you.
British accents are quite different and it is better to spend
time in the months before the test listening to British radio
stations and podcasts or watching the BBC, British shows,
and movies. This is one of the major differences between
the IELTS exam and the TOEFL, which features more
American accents.

Get used to the way letters and numbers are
pronounced in British (and American)
English. Sometimes, in the listening section, you are asked
to write down the spelling of a name, place, or address. If you
make a mistake in the spelling while writing it down, you will
get the answer wrong.

The expressions used also tend to be taken from

British rather than American English. This means you
may hear unfamiliar idioms, which can confuse you. Speakers
may also use British words for common items such as "flat"
for "apartment", "lorry" for "truck", or "advert" for
advertisement. Make sure you study the most common
differences in British and American vocabulary and listen to
as many IELTS exercises as possible before your exam to
prepare you for the actual test experience.

Learn to distinguish opinion from fact. In the third

and fourth listening passages, you will probably be tested on
what one of the speakers thinks or what his / her view is. This
may or may not be stated outright, but as an underlying
theme in the whole conversation or in the tone of the
speakers voice, rather than the words themselves.

Don't worry if your classmates or friends get higher

listening scores than you. Each one has his or her
strengths and weaknesses, just like you. Each one also has
his or her own language goals. Just focus on your own needs
and don't compare yourself to others.

Follow instructions very carefully. If the instructions

state, "Write no more than three words ", then you must not
write more or you will receive no marks for your answer, even
if some of the words you wrote were part of the correct
answer. Similarly, read each instruction carefully. Sometimes,
you are asked to circle two answers, sometimes three, and so
on. You must read the instruction each time as it may differ
from the previous ones. Remember, the ability to follow
instructions in English is a test in itself.

Success mantra IELTS guide

3 | Page
The questions follow the oral text. Remember this - it
will make it easier for you to focus on the current question, or
to know when you've been left behind, in case the speakers
have gone on to providing the answer to the following quest

Familiarize yourself with charts, graphs, flow-charts,

bar charts and pie charts, etc. These often appear as part
of the answer choices in the fourth section. The more
comfortable you are with interpreting the data represented in
them, the easier your exam will be.

IELTS READING TASKS:

There are 10-11 types of questions on both the Academic or

General Reading Module:

Multiple choice
Multiple matching
Short-answer
Sentence completion
Tables, diagrams, flow charts
Summary completion
Paragraph headings
Locating information
Identifying writer's views or claims
Classification
Matching

You need to work through a number of practice tests in order to

identify exactly what you need to do and to understand how to
correctly answer each type of question. After doing a few tests,
analyze your answers. Doing so will help you recognize which
types of questions are easier for you and which types cause
more difficulty. Consult your teachers or specialized IELTS
guidebooks to learn strategies to help you with ones that are
more challenging.

Success mantra IELTS guide

4 | Page
IELTS READING - TIME:

Remember that you have three reading passages and forty

questions to answer in only one hour. Also, the three passages
become increasingly more difficult. Divide your time into three
20 minute segments, or as suggested below:

17 minutes on section 1
20 minutes on section 2
23 minutes on section 3

If you're having difficulty with a particular question, mark it for

your attention, move on to the next question and come back
later. If you finish early, use the time to review.

IELTS READING SKILLS:

To do well in the IELTS reading test, you need global as well as

macro reading skills. This means you should to be able to do
the following:

Grasp the big picture as well as the minor points.

distinguish facts from opinions and attitudes
identify the overall purpose of the passage
follow the main arguments in a written text
locate specific details and relevant information
summarize the key points
represent written information in graphic form
infer meaning
use accurate spelling and correct grammar

Specifically, three key reading skills will help you do the above
most effectively:

Skimming
Scanning
Reading for detail

Success mantra IELTS guide

5 | Page
The first two strategies, skimming and scanning, involve
reading very quickly, but each strategy has a different purpose.
Skimming means reading quickly to get the main idea of a text.
Scanning means reading quickly to look for a specific piece of
info or specific words. The third approach, reading for detail
means reading every word in order to really understand the
message of the text.

On the IELTS, you will need to use all three techniques at

different stages. For example, you may start by skimming
through the entire text to get a general idea of the passage.
Next, you may look at the questions to see what kind of
information is required. Then, you may scan the text for a
specific piece of information or read a particular section in
greater detail to discover the information you need to answer
the question correctly.

If you are weak in these areas or read slowly, there are a

number of excellent general ESL and specific IELTS books which
can help you strengthen your reading techniques, so you can
complete the test correctly and successfully within the one hour
time limit.

Vocabulary for the Introduction Part:

In the introduction part of your IETLS essay you should
write sentences relevant to the topic given and generally
accepted ideas about it. Use your best English here as it
will attract or bore your reader about the whole writing.
You will make or break your impression in this paragraph.
Be very cautious about the introduction part. Never just
copy the sentence of the question. If you really need to,
use synonyms and different sentence structure.

Examples:
1) Mobile phone and Internet are two great innovation of
science for communication and had been facilitating
people for a long time. These two technologies are
widely used in almost all the countries of the world and
had become parts of our daily lives. We can't deny the
usefulness of these technologies as they had made our
life easier than it was ever before. In my opinion the
advantages of these two devices far outweigh the
demerits they have.
2) Every human being with an ambition of getting higher
knowledge requires attending colleges or universities.
The main reason of attending universities or colleges
may differ man to man. Someone may aspire to achieve
greater knowledge, someone may just want to earn a
certificate or someone might attribute it as a step
towards career development.
3) Compared with people in the past, we concern far less
on the preparation of food today, thanks to the
development of agriculture and scientific technology. A
fair amount of beneficial influence is occurring to us
consequently.

IELTS Vocabulary: Presenting an argument

Success mantra IELTS guide
49 | P a g e
A: Read the text below, in which somebody is trying to
decide whether to go straight to university from school,
or spend a year traveling around the world. Put their
argument into the correct order, using the key words
and expressions in italics to help you. The first one and
last one have been done for you.

I'm ready in two minds about what to do when I leave

school. Should I go straight to university or should I spend a
year traveling around the world?

It is often said that knowledge is the key to power, and I

cannot disagree with this.

On the one hand, I would experience lots of different

cultures.

Unfortunately, another point is that if I spent a year

traveling I would need a lot of money.

And I'm not alone in this opinion. Many consider a sound

career and a good salary to be an important goal.

However, it could be argued that I would also meet lots of

interesting people while I was traveling.

Secondly, if I go straight to university, I'll learn so many

things that will help me in my future life.

First of all, there are so many benefits of going straight to

university.

But I believe that it would be easy to make a bit while I

was traveling, giving English lessons or working in hotels and
shops.

Success mantra IELTS guide

50 | P a g e
Moreover, I'll be able to take part in the social activities
that the university offers, and meet lots of new friends who
share the same interests.

The most important point is that the sooner I get my

qualifications, the quicker I'll get a job and start earning.

Nevertheless, these inconveniences would be an

inevitable part of traveling and would be greatly outweighed
by the other advantages.

In my opinion, starting work and making money is one of

the most important things in life.

On the other hand, I could end up suffering from culture

shock, homesickness and some strange tropical diseases.

Furthermore, if I spent a year traveling, I would learn more

about the world.

All right, I've made my mind up. Now, where's my nearest

travel agency?

When you are asked to present an argument, you should

always look at it from two sides, giving reasons why you
agree and disagree before reaching a conclusion. Other
words and expressions which you might find useful
include:

I believe that/ despite this/ in spite of this/ also/ thirdly/I

think/ finally/ in conclusion/ nonetheless/ admittedly/ on
the contrary/ at any rate/ notwithstanding/ for all that/
even if.

IELTS Speaking Test: Key Facts
Duration: Between 11 and 14 minutes.
Participants: Candidates interviewed individually. The test is recorded.
Format: The test consists of three parts.

Part 1 (Interview)
Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test lasts between 4 and 5 minutes. The
examiner will ask some simple 'getting-to-know-you' questions which will
help the examiner find out a little about you and help put you at ease.
These will be general questions such as about your family, your studies,
where you come from or what your interests are.

Example Questions

Q: Where are you from?

Q: Why are you studying English?
Q: Have you visited any English speaking countries?
Q: Do you play any sports?

Tips!
Giving full, relevant answers to the examiner's questions will help get the
interview off to a good start.

1) Avoid giving short, uncommunicative replies.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I'm from Hoorn in the Netherlands. (Don't stop there!) It's about 35
kilometers north of Amsterdam. It's a modern city but with a lot of history
and a lovely place to live.

2) Avoid short, 'yes', 'no' answers to closed questions. (These are

questions beginning 'Have you ...', 'Do you ...', 'Is it ...' etc which can be
answered simply with a yes or no answer).
Q: Have you visited any English speaking countries?
A: Yes. (Don't stop there!) I went to England last year and spent two
weeks seeing the sights. A couple of years ago I went to New York with my
parents and had a great time.
Q: Do you play any sports?
A: No. (Don't stop there!) I'm not really interested in playing sports. I like
watching sport on TV and I really enjoyed keeping up with the Olympics
recently.

3) Offer examples to help you explain a statement.

Q: Why are you preparing for the IELTS exam?

A: Because I need it for my studies. (Don't stop there!) I've been offered a
Success mantra IELTS guide
59 | P a g e
place at a university in England to study on an MBA but I need to show my
level of English is good enough.

Part 2 (Long Turn)

Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test lasts between 3 and 4 minutes (including
1 minute preparation time). The examiner gives you a task card and you
have to speak about the subject without interruption for between 1 and 2
minutes.

Example Task

Example 1) Describe a place you have visited that you have fond
memories of.

You should say:

Example 2) Describe your favourite personal possession.

You should say:

what this possession is

when you first got it
when you use it
and why it's so important to you.

Tips!

1. Use your 1 minute preparation time wisely and make notes of the
points you'd like to make.

2. The question will help you with the structure of your talk. The
introduction can include the item itself and maybe a brief description. The
main body of your talk could describe the situation when you acquired the
object and go on to explain when you use it. You can then end with an
explanation of why the object is so important.

3. Try to avoid giving a very dry, unimaginative introduction such as 'The

object I'm going to describe is ....'. Get your talk off to a memorable start
with something on the lines of: 'If I was about to lose everything and could
only save one thing it would be my ...', or 'I've got several things that
mean a lot to me but the one that really stands out is my ...'

Success mantra IELTS guide

60 | P a g e
4. If you're concerned about not having enough to talk about for 1 to 2
minutes or running out of time before you've finished, the answer is to
practise as often as possible. Time yourself and ask a friend for feedback.

Part 3: (Two-Way Discussion)

In Part 3 of the test, which lasts between 3 to 4 minutes, the examiner will
ask you questions linked to the topic in Part 2.

Example Questions (Based on example topics in Part 2 above)

Q: It is sometimes argued that local cultures are being destroyed by

tourism. Why do think people might feel this?
Q: What benefits do people get from travelling to other countries?
Q: Do you think people are becoming too materialistic?
Q: To what extent are people's buying habits affected by advertising?

Tips!

1. If you need time to collect your thoughts use expressions (sparingly)

like: 'That's a good question.', 'well, let me think ...

2. Don't forget to avoid short, 'yes', 'no' answers. Try to offer examples to
back up a statement.

3. Help make your contributions memorable. Try explaining a point using a

short, personal anecdote.

4. If the examiner asks a question that you don't understand, take control
of the situation with questions such as those that appear below.
Responding like this will show evidence of your communication skills.

A) If the examiner uses a word or phrase that you don't understand, say
something like:
"Sorry but could you explain what you mean by ........" or
"I haven't come across that word/expression before. Could you explain
what you mean?"

Success mantra IELTS guide

61 | P a g e
B) If you simply didn't hear something that was asked, respond with:
"Excuse me, I didn't quite catch that. Could you say that again?"
"I'm sorry, but would you mind repeating that?"

C) If you want to make sure you've understood what the examiner has
asked you could say:
"Do you mean ........"
"When you say ........, do you mean/are you asking........?

IELTS SPEAKING
The success in IELTS test largely depends on students' ability
to follow the instructions. It sounds ridiculously simple, and yet
it is a common mistake to underestimate the importance of
following the instructions precisely. So here is a list of 8 most
famous IELTS pitfalls that cost test takers precious points.

1. More is less. A very common mistake is to answer in more

words than instructed. If the task says "Not more than 3
words", answering in 4 or more words will definitely cost marks.

2. Less is less. The length of a written task is crucial. When

instructions mention a minimal number of words (250 for essay,
150 for report or letter), it means that any work shorter than
required will be penalized.
3. Longer essay doesn't mean better mark. Another common
misconception is that longer essays score better in IELTS. Not
only is this a myth, but also a dangerous one. Writing a long
essay can indirectly cost marks, because the chances of
making mistakes increase with the number of words and
sentences.

4. Changing the subject is unacceptable. Every so often a

student is asked to write on topic, that he doesn't understand.
To avoid the disaster of missing a whole task they decide to
Success mantra IELTS guide
62 | P a g e
write on a slightly or entirely - different topic. The sad fact is
that no matter how beautiful the submitted work is, the wrong
topic means zero score. Another similar pitfall is to omit parts of
the given topic or ignore the guidelines in your work. Every
point the topic refers to needs to be covered because the
examiners will be actually counting them.

5. Good memory can get you in trouble. Having seen that the
topics sometimes repeat, "smart" students with good memory
decide to memorize essays. This is a terrible mistake to make
because the examiners are trained to look for memorized
essays and have firm instructions to disqualify such works on
the spot.
6. Accent is not important. Pronunciation is.! IELTS, being a
test for non-native English speakers can't penalize people for
having an accent. The problem here is that not everyone knows
the difference between speaking with an accent and
mispronouncing the words. No matter how strong of an accent
a person has, the words are to be pronounced correctly or it will
cost marks.

7. It is not the ideas that are important, but the way they are
described in. Many students think that expressing the wrong
ideas (whether it is in essay, letter or discussion) can harm
their score. The truth is that no idea can be wrong and the
ideas are not important on their own, it is the way they are
expressed in that important.

8. Connective words: the more is not always the better.

Smart students know that one of the essay marking criteria are
coherence and cohesion, and what better way is there to
demonstrate cohesion than to use lots of connective words,
right? Wrong. Overuse of connective words is a know problem,
which is easily recognized and penalized by the examiners.

Success mantra IELTS guide

63 | P a g e
And in conclusion, a word of advice: to stay out of trouble, it is
equally important to be aware of the pitfalls and to practice
enough before the exam. Being familiar with the structure and
the procedure of the test will build up confidence and that will
reflect in your score.

SAMPLE 9 BANDS EASY:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a

waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services
instead.

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
experience or knowledge.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample IELTS Writing - Model Answer

These days, the government spends a large part of its budget not only on
public services, but also the arts. Although I agree that it is important to
spend money on public services, I do not think spending on the arts is a
waste of money.

There are several reasons for spending a significant amount of the

government budget on public services. First and foremost, public services
are the things such as hospitals, roads and schools, and these things
determine the quality of life that most of us will have. For example, if the
government does not spend enough money on hospitals, the health of our
society may decline. Similarly, if not enough money is spent on schools,
our children may not be properly educated. Also, it will be the poor in our
society that will be affected more if we do not spend enough on these
things because they are the ones more dependent on such services.

However, this does not mean that the arts should be completely
neglected. To begin, it is difficult for many arts institutions to generate
much profit, so without some help from the government, many theaters
and other such places may have to close. Moreover, the arts also have an
important impact on our quality of life. Many people get great pleasure in
going to see music and theatre performances so it is important that the
government assists such institutions so that they can continue to provide
entertainment to the public.

Success mantra IELTS guide

91 | P a g e
To sum up, there are clear benefits of ensuring a large amount of
investment goes into public services as this influences the quality of life
for nearly all of us. That said, I do not believe spending money on the arts
is a waste of money as this too provides important benefits.

Write about the following topic:
Levels of youth crime are increasing rapidly in most cities around
the world.
What are the reasons for this, and suggest some solutions.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
experience or knowledge.
You should write at least 250 words.

Sample IELTS Writing - Model Answer

Over the last few decades, many cities around the world have seen
alarming increases in the levels of youth crime. This essay will discuss the
reasons for this and provide some possible solutions.
The first reason is connected with the family. In order for a child to grow
up in a balanced way, it is very important that he or she is nurtured well
by his or her parents. However, these days, it is often the case that
children are neglected. This may be because of the fact that many parents
in cities now both have to work so are often not around to give their
children support when needed. Another factor is the increasing levels of
poverty around the world. We have seen with globalization the rich get
richer and the poor get poorer, and this inevitably means that those who
Success mantra IELTS guide
93 | P a g e
are poorer will have to resort to illegal means to get what others have. Of
course, this will include the children in the poorer families.
However, there are ways to tackle such problems. Firstly, one of the ways
to combat the problem is to have stricter punishments. Although, as
discussed above, it can be outside factors that lead to crime, it is still
important to have severe punishments to deter teenagers from crime. All
too often, because they are young, the courts are too lenient. Parents also
have to take more responsibility for their childrens actions. They too
should be punished if their children commit crime.
To sum up, several factors have led to increases in youth crime, but
measures are available to tackle this problem.

Traffic Problems Essay - Model Answer

Success mantra IELTS guide

94 | P a g e
Traffic congestion in many cities around the world is severe. One possible
solution to this problem is to impose heavy taxes on car drivers and use
this money to make public transport better. This essay will discuss the
benefits and drawbacks of such a measure.

One of the first benefits of such a measure is that the heavy taxes would
discourage car owners from using their cars because it would become
very expensive to drive. This would mean that they would begin to make
use of public transport instead, thus reducing traffic problems and
pollution as well. Another benefit would be that much more use would be
made of public transport if it was improved. It is often the case that public
transport in cities is very poor. For example, we often see old buses and
trains that people would rather not use. High taxes would generate
enough money to make the necessary changes.

Nevertheless, there are drawbacks to such a solution. First and foremost,

this would be a heavy burden on the car drivers. At present, taxes are
already high for a lot of people, and so further taxes would only mean less
money at the end of the month for most people who may have no choice
but to drive every day. In addition, this type of tax would likely be set at a
fixed amount. This would mean that it would hit those with less money
harder, whilst the rich could likely afford it. It is therefore not a fair tax.

To conclude, this solution is worth considering to improve the current

situation, but there are advantages and disadvantages of introducing such
a policy.

IELTS Overpopulation Essay - Sample Answer

Many countries of the world are currently experiencing problems caused

by rapidly growing populations in urban areas, and both governments and
individuals have a duty to find ways to overcome these problems.

Overpopulation can lead to overcrowding and poor quality housing in

many large cities. Poorly heated or damp housing could cause significant
health problems, resulting in illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Another serious consequence of overcrowding is a rising crime rate as
poor living conditions may lead young people in particular to take
desperate measures and turn to crime or drugs.

In terms of solutions, I believe the government should be largely

responsible. Firstly, it is vital that the state provides essential housing and
healthcare for all its citizens. Secondly, setting up community projects to
help foster more community spirit and help keep young people off the
street is a good idea. For example, youth clubs or evening classes for
teenagers would keep them occupied. Finally, more effective policing of
inner city areas would also be beneficial.

Naturally, individuals should also act responsibly to address these

problems, and the motivation to do this would hopefully arise if the
measures described above are put into place by the government. This is
because it will encourage people to have more pride in their own
community and improve the situation.

Therefore, it is clear that the problems caused by overpopulation in urban

areas are very serious. Yet if governments and individuals share a
collective responsibility, then it may well become possible to offer some
solutions.

Causes and Effects Essay - Model Answer

Over the last ten years, western societies have seen close to a 20% rise in
the number of children who are overweight. This essay will discuss some
reasons why this has occurred and examine the consequences of this
worrying trend.

The main cause of this problem is poor diet. Over the last decade there
has been a prolific increase in the number of fast food restaurants. For
example, on nearly every high street there is a MacDonalds, Kentucky
Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut. The food in these places has been proven to
be very unhealthy, and much of the advertising is targeted at children,
thus ensuring that they constitute the bulk of the customers of these
establishments. However, it is not only due to eating out, but also the type
of diet many children have at home. A lot of food consumed is processed
food, especially with regards to ready-made meals which are a quick and
easy option for parents who are working hard.

The effects of this have been and will continue to be very serious. Firstly,
there has been a large increase in health related diseases amongst
children, especially diabetes. This debilitating illness means a child has to
be injected with insulin for the rest of their life. Not only this, very
overweight children often experience bullying from other children, which
may affect their mental health. The negative stigma of being overweight
may also affect self-esteem.

Model Answer for Human Cloning Essay

The cloning of animals has been occurring for a number of years now, and
this has now opened up the possibility of cloning humans too. Although
there are clear benefits to humankind of cloning to provide spare body
parts, I believe it raises a number of worrying ethical issues.

Due to breakthroughs in medical science and improved diets, people are

living much longer than in the past. This, though, has brought with it
problems. As people age, their organs can fail so they need replacing. If
humans were cloned, their organs could then be used to replace those of
sick people. It is currently the case that there are often not enough organ
donors around to fulfil this need, so cloning humans would overcome the
issue as there would then be a ready supply.

However, for good reasons, many people view this as a worrying

development. Firstly, there are religious arguments against it. It would
Success mantra IELTS guide
98 | P a g e
involve creating another human and then eventually killing it in order to
use its organs, which it could be argued is murder. This is obviously a sin
according to religious texts. Also, dilemmas would arise over what rights
these people have, as surely they would be humans just like the rest of us.
Furthermore, if we have the ability to clone humans, it has to be
questioned where this cloning will end. Is it then acceptable for people to
start cloning relatives or family members who have died?

To conclude, I do not agree with this procedure due to the ethical issues
and dilemmas it would create. Cloning animals has been a positive
development, but this is where it should end.

Animal Rights Essay - Model Answer

Some people believe that animals should be treated in the same way
humans are and have similar rights, whereas others think that it is more
important to use them as we desire for food and medical research. This
essay will discuss both points of view.

Success mantra IELTS guide

99 | P a g e
With regard to the exploitation of animals, people believe it is acceptable
for several reasons. Firstly, they think that humans are the most important
beings on the planet, and everything must be done to ensure human
survival. If this means experimenting on animals so that we can fight and
find cures for diseases, then this takes priority over animal suffering.
Furthermore, it is believed by some that animals do not feel pain or loss as
humans do, so if we have to kill animals for food or other uses, then this is
morally acceptable.

However, I do not believe these arguments stand up to scrutiny. To begin,

it has been shown on numerous occasions by secret filming in laboratories
via animal rights groups that animals feel as much pain as humans do,
and they suffer when they are kept in cages for long periods. In addition, a
substantial amount of animal research is done for cosmetics, not to find
cures for diseases, so this is unnecessary. Finally, it has also been proven
that humans can get all the nutrients and vitamins that they need from
green vegetables and fruit. Therefore, again, having to kill animals for
food is not an adequate argument.

To sum up, although some people argue killing animals for research and
food is ethical, I would argue there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate
that this is not the case, and, therefore, steps must be taken to improve
the rights of animals.

Model Answer

Most nations around the world have at least some, or possibly many, old
buildings such as temples, churches and houses in their cities, villages
and surrounding areas which have historical significance. In my opinion, it
is very important to maintain these, but this does not mean progress
should stop.

Preserving certain old buildings is important for several reasons. Firstly,

these structures provide an insight into the history of our countries,
showing us how people many centuries ago lived their lives. Without
them, we could only learn by books, and it would undoubtedly be sad if
this were the only way to see them. Many of these buildings are also very
beautiful. Take for example the many religious buildings such as churches
and temples that we see around the world. Not only this, but on a more
practical level, many of these buildings provide important income to a
country as many tourists visit them in great numbers.

However, this certainly does not mean that modernization should be

discouraged. I believe that old buildings can be protected in tandem with
progress. For example, in many circumstances we see old historic
buildings being renovated whilst maintaining their original character, and
being used for modern purposes. Also, in no way does history hinder
progress, and in fact it is the opposite. By studying and learning about our
history, we understand more about the world we live in, and this helps us
to build a better future.

To conclude, I believe that it is very important to protect and preserve old

buildings as we can learn about our history as can others from other
countries. Such knowledge can also help us to understand how to
modernize our countries in the best way.

Essay for IELTS Model Answer

The world that we live in today is dominated by advertising. Adverts are

on television, on the World Wide Web, in the street and even on our
mobile phones. However, many of the strategies used to sell a product or
service can be considered immoral or unacceptable.

To begin with, the fact that we cannot escape from advertising is a

significant cause for complaint. Constant images and signs wherever we
look can be very intrusive and irritating at times. Take for example
advertising on the mobile phone. With the latest technology mobile
companies are now able to send advertising messages via SMS to
consumers' phones whenever they choose. Although we expect adverts in
numerous situations, it now seems that there are very few places we can
actually avoid them.

A further aspect of advertising that I would consider unethical is the way

that it encourages people to buy products they may not need or cannot
afford. Children and young people in particular are influenced by adverts
showing the latest toys, clothing or music and this can put enormous
pressure on the parents to buy these products.

In addition, the advertising of tobacco products and alcohol has long been
a controversial issue, but cigarette adverts have only recently been
banned in many countries. It is quite possible that alcohol adverts
encourage excessive consumption and underage drinking, yet restrictions
have not been placed on this type of advertising in the same way as
smoking.

It is certainly true to say that advertising is an everyday feature of our

lives. Therefore, people are constantly being encouraged to buy products
or services that might be too expensive, unnecessary or even unhealthy.
In conclusion, many aspects of advertising do appear to be morally wrong
and are not acceptable in today's society.

Competing for Jobs Essay

It is common these days for older people who need employment to

compete with people much younger for the same type of work. While this
can create problems, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the
impacts.

The main problem is that older people may find it more difficult to secure
work, which arises because younger people are more likely to have up-to-
date qualifications and experience. For example, information technology is
integral to a variety of jobs these days and the skills needed for this are
rapidly changing. Young people may well have recent knowledge through
university or through using technology in their leisure time. If older people
cannot secure work, this leads to other problems. As they are likely to
have a family to support, they may not have an adequate income to
provide for their childrens education or other such necessities.

It is the government that needs to take measures to ameliorate such

problems. This needs to begin with ensuring that older people have all the
skills needed to compete in the job market, which could be achieved by
providing free training on the most important job requirements at local
community colleges, for example. In addition to this, the government

Success mantra IELTS guide

103 | P a g e
needs to encourage employers to change their employment practices by
promoting the value of experience that older workers can bring to a job.

To conclude, the main issue with competition for work between these
groups is that older people may start to find it more difficult to find work.
However, despite this, through the right training and changes to
recruitment practices, older people can compete on an equal footing to
the younger generation in the jobs market.

Internet Essay - Model Answer

It is evident that, at present, people are spending a considerable amount

of time on the Internet, and thus spending less time with real people. I
strongly agree that although this use of the Internet has greatly increased
the level of communication available, it has also had detrimental effects
on the amount and type of social interaction that takes place.

Success mantra IELTS guide

104 | P a g e
The benefits of the Internet in terms of increased communication are
clear, with people connected across the globe. In the past, communication
was only possible by phone or mail, which entailed time and expense. It
also usually meant just keeping in contact with those people already
known to you. With the internet, this has changed dramatically. Email and
social networking sites such as Face book and MSN have created online
communities that are global in scale, and they have fostered
communication between people and countries that we would not have
thought possible in the not too distant past.

That said, there is no doubt in my mind that this has had negative impacts
on social interaction. People, especially the younger generation, spend
hours of their time online, chatting and on forums. Although this can be
beneficial, it is certainly not the same as real interaction with human
beings and does not involve the same skills. It is important that children
have and maintain real friendships in order to develop their own
interpersonal skills. Not only this, it can also have negative effects on local
communities if people are spending most of their time communicating
online and not mixing in their neighborhoods, and possibly lead to feelings
of isolation for those individuals who do not have a real person to turn to
in times of need.

To conclude, I believe that the internet has undoubtedly been beneficial,

but there are good reasons to be concerned about social interaction in our
societies. It is therefore important that we maintain a balance between
our online life and our contact with real human beings.

IELTS Essay Question

The growing number of overweight people is putting a strain on the health
care system in an effort to deal with the health issues involved. Some
people think that the best way to deal with this problem is to introduce
more physical education lessons in the school curriculum. To what extent
do you agree or disagree?

Agree Disagree Model Essay

Owing to the problems which a growing population of overweight people

causes for the health care system, some people think that the key to
solving these issues is to have more sport and exercise in schools. In my
opinion, I completely agree that this is the best way to tackle the issue of
deteriorating public health in relation to weight.

Success mantra IELTS guide

105 | P a g e
Firstly, dealing with the issues surrounding obesity and weight problems is
best solved by taking a long term approach and introducing more sport
and exercise in schools. This method will ensure that the next generation
will be healthier and will not have such health problems. At the moment,
the average child in the West does sport possibly twice a week, which is
not enough to counteract their otherwise sedentary lifestyle. However, by
incorporating more sports classes into the curriculum as well as
encouraging extracurricular sports activities, they will undoubtedly
become fitter and more active.

Another point to consider is that having more sports lessons for children in
schools will probably result in children developing an interest in exercise
which might filter through to other members of their family and have a
longer lasting effect. In other words, parents with sporty children are more
likely to get involved in sport as a way of encouraging their children. By
both parents and children being involved, it will ensure that children grow
up to incorporate sport into their daily lives. This is certainly a natural and
lasting way to improve public health.

In conclusion, to deal with an increasing population of unfit, overweight

people, changing the lifestyle of the coming generation by introducing
sport in schools is the easiest and most effective method to use.

The bar graph provides information about the most Common sports played in New
Zealand in 2002. It gives figures for both boys and girls and clearly shows that their
participation in sports is fairly equal. However, their sporting preferences tend to be
different.

According to the graph, the most popular sport among girls is netball, with participation
rates reaching 25 per cent. A similar percentage of boys prefer soccer, which is clearly
their favorite sport. Ten per cent of boys also enjoy playing cricket but hardly any girls
take part in this game. While swimming is popular among both boys and girls, fewer boys
participate in this sport - about 13 per cent compared to approximately 22 per cent of
girls.

Other sports such as tennis, basketball and martial arts have lower levels of popularity,
and a significant percentage of boys and girls say they enjoy sports not referred to on the
chart.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram reveals that the number of hours per week spent in unpaid work is
unequally distributed between men and women.

In households where there are no children, women are reported to work some 30 hours
per week in such tasks as housework and gardening. Men's contribution to these unpaid
jobs averages a considerably lower 18 hours.

When children enter the household, however, the inequality becomes even more
pronounced. In families of 1 - 2 children, men maintain approximately the same number
of hours of unpaid work as in childless households, but the number of hours women work
in the home rises to 52 per week, much of it, on doubt, due to childcare responsibilities.

Interestingly, when there are three or more children in the household, men are found to
work even fewer hours around the house than before the appearance of the third child.
Whereas women's unpaid hours rise to approximately 56 per week, the corresponding
figure for men, 16, actually represents a decrease.

Daily calorie supply per person 3326 2846 1927 1749

Adult literacy rate (%) 99 99 68 34

Model answer

A glance at four indicators of economic and social conditions in four countries, Canada,
Japan, Peru and Zaire, in 1994 reflects the great differences that exist between wealthier
and poorer nations.

The table shows that Japan and Canada had annual incomes of $15 760 and $11 100 per
person, respectively. These figures were overwhelmingly greater than the corresponding
figures of $160 in Peru and $130 in Zaire.

Health indicators, too, reflected overall levels of affluence in the four nations. Life
expectancy at birth, for example, was higher among the more economically developed
countries. Japan reported the highest life expectancy, 78. This was followed by Canada,

Success mantra IELTS guide

109 | P a g e
76; Peru, 51; and Zaire, 47. This suggests that richer societies are able to put more
money into health care than poorer ones.

The amount of calories consumed daily per person roughly followed the same ranking.
Canadians each consumed some 3 326 calories per day while the Japanese took 2846
calories. The corresponding figures for Peru and Zaire were 1927 and 1749, respectively.

Literacy rates among adults, too, were higher in wealthier countries, no doubt a reflection
of ability to invest in education. Canada and Japan both reported literacy rates of 99%,
while Peru claimed 68%. Zaire, the least economically developed of the four countries,
had a literacy rate of 34%.

The data appear to confirm the often cited link between national wealth and health and
education standards.

Most consumer goods go through a series of stages before they emerge as finished
products ready for sale.

Raw materials and manufactured components comprise the initial physical input in the
manufacturing process. Once obtained, these are stored for later assembly. But
assembly first depends upon the production planning stage, where it is decided how and
in what quantities the stored materials will be processed to create sufficient quantities of
finished goods. The production planning stage itself follows the requirements of the
goods' design stage that proceeds from extensive research. After assembly, the products
are inspected and tested to maintain quality control l Those units that pass the
Success mantra IELTS guide
111 | P a g e
inspection and testing stages are then packaged, despatched and offered for sale in
retail outlets. The level of sales, which is the end point of the manufacturing process,
helps determine production planning.

A product's design is not only the result of product research, but is also influenced by
testing and market research. If the testing stage (after assembly and inspection) reveals
unacceptable problems in the finished product, then adjustments will have to be made to
the product's design. Similarly, market research, which examines the extent and nature
of the demand for products, has the role of guiding product design to suit consumer
demands which may change with time. Market research, while influenced by product
sales, also serves to foster future sales by devising suitable advertising for the goods.

Thus the reality of consumer goods manufacturing goes well beyond a simple linear
production process.

5) Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay.
(High acid levels are measured by low pH values)

Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health.

Anyone who has visited a dentist has been told that eating excessive amounts of sweets risks
harming the teeth. This is because sweets lower pH levels in the mouth to dangerous levels.

When the pH level in the mouth is kept above 5.5, acidity is such that teeth are unlikely to be
in danger of decay. Sweet foods, however, cause pH in the mouth to drop for a time, and the
longer pH levels remain below 5.5, the greater the opportunity for decay to occur.

By comparing fruit sugar, cane sugar and honey, which are all common ingredients of sweet
foods, we find that cane sugar lowers pH levels for the longest period, thus producing the

Success mantra IELTS guide

112 | P a g e
greatest risk of the three. Approximately five minutes after consuming cane sugar, pH levels
drop to as little as pH 3.5. They then begin to rise slowly, but do not rise above pH 5.5 until at
least 30 minutes have elapsed. By contrast, fruit sugar, which causes the mouth's acidity to
fall to just above pH 4, poses a danger for a shorter period: tooth decay is unlikely 20 minutes
after consumption. Honey appears an even less risky substance. Though acidity falls to about
pH 4.75 within five minutes of consumption, it returns to above pH 5.5 in under fifteen
minutes.

The implications, then, are that people who insist on eating sweet foods should be aware of
the ingredients, and that fruit sugar or honey appear preferable to cane sugar.

The three graphs provide an overview of the types of music people purchase in the UK.
At first glance we see that classical music is far less popular than pop or rock music.

While slightly more women than men buy pop music, the rock market is dominated by
men with 30% buying rock, compared to 17% of women. From the first graph we see
that interest in pop music is steady from age 16 to 44 with 20% of the population
continuing to buy pop CDs after the age of 45.

The interest in rock music reaches its peak among the 25 to 34 year olds, though it
never sells as well as pop. Interest also drops off after the age of 35 with an even
sharper fall from age 45 onwards, a pattern which is the opposite to the classical music
graph.
