Carrier First Floor Seating Proposal

After observing Carrier Library's first floor, the document proposes adding more tables to address the lack of seating. It was found that removing some comfy chairs could make space for 10 additional long tables and 13 high-top tables. Process Analysis

After conducting our observation of Carrier, we found that there really isnt a
process to follow or assess. Instead we focused on looking at Carriers first floor and
assessing everything available for the students to access. After conducting our
interviews and surveys we found that JMUs student body really wants Carrier to add
more tables, because right now there are very few spaces free during the day. We then
took this information and went through and mapped out every table and comfy chair that
is located on the first floor. Currently there are 65 long tables, 6 high tops, and 53 comfy
chairs spread out around the first floor and 19 tables in Starbucks, that are available for
students to use.

After conducting our observation of Carriers first floor, we found that there is
enough space to fit 10 long tables and 13 more high tops on the first floor. We found
that the majority of the comfy chairs are taking up a lot of room that could fit a table. If
they added a table there instead of comfy chairs more students would be able to sit and
be productive. If you look at the layout, we found that if the library removes the three
comfy chairs located at the window, they put a long table that could fit at least 4-6
students. In the old lobby of Carrier there are currently 4 comfy chairs we found that
they could place a long table there that could fit 4-6 students as well. In the room beside
the old lobby they could replace four comfy chairs with a table as well to fit 4-6 students.
In the main lobby they can add a high top table beside the other two high tops that are
beside the wall of Starbucks. Carrier could also add a hightop where two comfy chair
currently are placed outside rooms 131 and 132. There are two comfy chairs currently
next to a column, so Carrier can replace these chairs with two high top tables that can fit
6-8 students. Between the two tables added and the other two hightop tables across
from those, a long table can be added. Looking at the diagram you can see that two
high top tables can be added beside the wall near the librarians desks. The wall beside
the steps you can see that at least four high top tables can also be added as well.
Finally, there can be four more long tables added around the first floor as you can see in
the diagram provided.
