Mars Rover Prototype Design Guide

The document provides instructions for constructing a prototype vehicle to be tested by rolling down a 30-45 degree slope and dropping 1 meter vertically without damage. It includes a list of materials, tools needed, and a step-by-step construction method. The vehicle, called a "mars rover", will have a wooden chassis, axles with wheels, and a holder for a water bottle to add weight. Holes will be drilled and parts glued together, following safety precautions and quality control checks.

4.0 Tips for construction
4.1 Drilling
Majority of components are held together by screws; predrilled
holes are required to be drilled before a screw is inserted. Measure
holes accurately with a ruler to insure Mars rover can be built
flawlessly. Whilst drilling hold down the MDF wood sheet with
clamps to prevent the wood from moving. Be sure to use the correct
drill end on the drill, so in this case use a drill for wood.
4.2 Gluing materials together
The joins between some components are held by glue. For glue not
to dry out once placed on the chassis be sure to have all the other
materials cut to size and ready. When gluing two things materials
together be sure to use clamps to press them together and hold
them together as the glue dries up.

5.0 Construction Method

DONT FORGET TO WEAR PROTECTION GEAR eg(safety

goggles, steel cap shoes, mouth )
Materials and tools check
Please make sure that the contractor has fulfilled the listed material
that Trolley Enterprise used to build a Mars rover. For every detail of
material used, please refer to list of materials table and list of tools
table.
5.1 Mars rover Chassis
1. Measure 375 mm along the L:900mm*W:150mm*H:25mm
MFD wood sheet and mark to mark the line across the width
of the wood sheet with a pencil and a corner ruler to make
sure the line is straight. (Refer to drawing Top View)
2. Cut the wooden sheet to length using a saw, be sure to cut
the wooden sheet along the drawn line.
3. Use sand paper to smoothen edges to remove burs.
5.2 Preparing and attaching of axle brace
1. Label and measure 55.5 mm on the length side of the plank
front end and measure 12.5 mm down the height of the plank.
Then measure the 55.5 mm from the back end towards the
front and measure 12.5 mm down the height of the wooden
plank and carefully mark the holes, they should be 55.5 mm
from either edge of the chassis. (Refer to drawing Side view)
2. Predrill these holes with a 5mm wood drill and then enlarge to
10mm.
5.3 Preparing water bottle holder for chassis

1. Label and cut the wood sheet, Using the saw to cut the
L:525mm*W:150mm*H:25mm wide MFD wood sheet into
strips to length. You will need two strips
L:205mm*W:150mm*H:15mm and two strips
L:110mm*W:150mm*H:15mm.

2. Now the construction starts by building a rectangle from the

two long lengths of cut MFD wood strip and two of the short
lengths of the wood strips. Place the edge of the long strips to
the end of the short strips, repeat this step till you make a
rectangle. If you are using hot glue, be sure to spread the hot
glue evenly across the entire joint and push the pieces firmly
together. (Refer to drawing top view)

3. Hold the pieces together with clamps until the hot glue has
cooled enough to start to set. Make sure the pieces are at 90
degree angles.

5.4 Preparing wheel axels

1. Cut the threaded rod into 2 identical size of 231mm using a
saw or an angle grinder. Hold down the threaded rod with
clamps whilst cutting the threaded rod. Use a metal file to
remove any burs from the ends. (Refer to drawing side view
and top view)

5.5 Attaching water bottle holder to chassis

1. Measure a box on the chassis, first measure 70mm along the
length of the chassis from the front right of the chassis to the
bottom right of the chassis, then measure 20 mm left along
the width towards the centre of the chassis and draw a point.
Second measure 70mm along the length of the chassis from
the front left of the chassis to the bottom left of the chassis,
then measure 20 mm right along the width towards the
centre of the chassis and draw a point. Third measure 70mm
along the length of the chassis from the bottom right of the
chassis to the front right of the chassis, then measure 20 mm
left along the width towards the centre of the chassis and
draw a point. Fourth measure 70mm along the length of the
chassis from the bottom left of the chassis to the front left of
the chassis, then measure 20 mm right along the width
towards the centre of the chassis and draw a point. Then
connect the dots with lines.
2. Place hot glue on the bottom edges of the water bottle holder
than place it in drawn rectangle in the step above and hold
the pieces together with clamps until the hot glue has cooled
enough to start to set. Make sure the water bottle is flat with
the chassis.

5.6 Inserting axel into chassis then place wheel on chassis

1. Insert the Threaded rod into both drilled holes.
2. Slide the threaded rod through the chassis so the threaded
rod is evenly distributed on either side of the chassis, use a
ruler to perfectly align the threaded rod. First place a nut onto
the threaded rod, followed by a M6 washer, then place the
wheel onto the threaded rod followed by the M6 washer then
the nut. Dont leave the nuts loose be sure to tighten the nut
towards the wheel, to keep the wheel stable and to prevent
wobbling.
3. Repeat step three for the second axle.

5.7 Check if there is any think loose

1. If there is anything loose or not holding together with water
bottle holder, simply add a little bit more glue.
2. If the wheels are wobbly or loose simply tighten the nuts
around the wheels.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This tender evaluation criteria will be used to evaluate the value

and quality of the tenders handed in by the bidding companies and
to select the best contractors that fit the clients requirement. The
contract is awarded to the company that tremendously fits the
criteria in this document.

2.0 CRITERIA EXPLAINED

2.1 Trustworthiness and Authenticity

Trolley Enterprise holds trustworthiness and authenticity as one of

its integral building blocks. Therefore, Trolley Enterprise supposes
that contractors deliver veracious documents as an essential factor
for cooperation. If evidences from company are not authentic, the
tenderer is unreliable and is not handed the contract. This will
cause our company not to choose your company as the best
candidate. Therefore, an outline of company goals and pursuit
combined with values of company is required.

2.2 Timeliness

Trolley enterprise upholds timeliness as an important factor for

utmost efficiency and therefore requires contractors are always
ready when a spontaneous meet-up is called. For Trolley Enterprise,
passion sprouts out the best results so we expect contractors to
always be punctual for meetings and make swift decisions that
ensure the project is well constructed. Because of this, Trolley
Enterprise demands contractors show past minutes and agendas of
meetings they were involved in to show how time efficient they are.
Our company also requires a turnitin receipt from tender submission
to gauge the tenderers time consciousness.

2.3 Professionalism:

The company to be awarded this project is required to have

members who can accomplish tasks self-sufficiently and have
communication as one of its strongest assets to enhance a broad
range of ideas generatable as Trolley Enterprise recognizes this will
make the final product even better. Also, due to the technicality of
the tasks diagrams, evidence is requested for companies to show
strength and ability to work on the project as well as
communication abilities.

2.4 Materials

Trolley Enterprise requires that companies find the materials as

postulated on the material summary sheet but should further try to
lessen overall stipulated cost. Also, recyclable materials are best
favored for construction by Trolley Enterprise. If a company finds
the required materials at lesser cost than stipulated, this would
facilitate a higher probability of landing the contract.

2.5 Experience:

This factor is a very crucial one for proficient ease of co-operation

between our companies. A company with contractors experienced
in carpentry work is required as this will ensure a more adequately
constructed project. In the tender submission, Trolley Enterprise
requires that practical experience or certificates are presented to
prove the tenderer is suitable to receive this contract.
